6.7 Engine Air Filter Confusion

Has anyone ever stripped out 1 of the air filter box lid screws and if so how did you fix it ?

I don't remember how they are threaded. Is it a nutsert from the bottom? I've fixed a couple on other trucks with JB Weld to hold the threaded piece in. On another if I recall correctly, I used a JB Weld or similar product and tapped it after hardening

It’s a self tapping screw in plastic. All of the other screws tighten down to a stop but 1 just doesn’t get tight like the other ones.

Can you run a zip tie through one side of the hole? Will give the screw more to bite on temporarily till you come up with something else. I don’t remember exactly what it looks like and I’m not by my truck.

That’s what I did. I cut just the end off of the zip tie and and had to fold it lengthwise with a pair of pliers, then shoved it down in the hole and it got really tight. I learned a trick to putting the screws back in. Turn them counter clockwise until you feel them drop down then tighten.
That way it’s not cutting new threads every time.

Is this still an issue? I just grabbed an AB filter from my dealer (Red Deer, Alberta). Was $60CAD IIRC.

Parts desk said they used the glue strip version for a short time. They were finding the strips had dried out and were laying in the bottom of the airbox when the trucks came in next time. They switched back to the AB version when supply came back.

I use the Fleetguard AF-27684 its the only filter I use, I can buy it cheaper than Mopar brand filter

Either the Mopar 53034051AB or Fleetguard AF27684 is fine. Both are the same filter and are 100% the filter these trucks should have.

The “glue strip” 68517554AA was never the correct air filter for these trucks, and shouldn’t have been used. But due to a mistake in the Mopar parts network, the system incorrectly was telling dealers to sub that filter in place of the AA.

Using the wrong air filter in a 2019+ 6.7 truck is a fast way to get yourself into issues. Ram changed some things with the 19+ trucks when it comes to the intake, sensors, MAF, values etc. Not exactly sure what, but they are far more susceptible to issues from an inferior air filter (or aftermarket CAI) than previous generations of the 6.7.

Use hand tools instead of a battery operated drill and that won’t happen.

Has anyone installed a filter minder on one of these trucks? I have been trying to find someone who has and keep coming up with nothing. I have heard that it’s not needed but Im wondering if the filter housing is causing some kind of restriction making the particular filter(s) the only ones that will work. I found some old threads about the 03’s having the same issues and many modified the air box to correct it.

Hmm, interesting theory. I’ve started having soot based regens about everyday, the past week. Right after a LOF, same fleetguard air filter I’ve been using. IDK, I’m at 55k and emissions warranty is kaput. I’m going to be putting a new exhaust on.

I’m anxious to hear the details.
LOF?

Lube Oil Filter, lol. From my quick lube days many moons ago.
Did you lube the seat and steering wheel? Lol
Check and see if you have developed a leak in the intake system from the turbo to intake manifold. Can you monitor the MAF sensor and see if you’re getting some weird readings? If this started all of a sudden, something has to be causing it.

You might try a couple of stationary regens back to back and see if that helps. This is from my personal experience:
When I first got my truck, after an oil change it would regen within 50-60 miles when using Rotella 5-40. This was also filling the filter and just dumping the rest of the 3 gallons in it after letting it drip for atleast an hour. I guess it could have been that there was actually more than a gallon in each jug or if the Rotella oil was off gassing when first run. I switched to VPBE and measure a half a quart out and put it in an empty jug. I know this all sounds like a bunch of BS but I have only had 4 or 5 soot based regens in two and a half years and 2 of those were at 21 hours since. You might check your CCV hose and see if there’s any oil in it.

I cleaned both map sensors and the MAF sensor just in case, the map on the intake horn had some soot on it but nothing crazy. MAF sensor seems to be running right, I use my mx+ to monitor it. I sprayed the boost tubes with soap water, no bubbles. I pulled off the Dpf pressure differential sensor and both hoses and cleaned those up as well, they were pretty clean. The delta seems to be running about normal on the Dpf differential sensor. I have not checked the ccv hose, will check that this afternoon. I’ve been leaving about a 1/2 quart of oil out using VPB and get right at the full mark on the dipstick. I just pulled my TT to the other side of New Orleans to get some work done, and my truck would barely get any passive regen, which is very odd and have never had that issue before. I dumped a bottle of 6400D in the tank this morning, we’ll see how that plays out. I’m a little nervous getting a new exhaust and it’s gonna cost a small fortune but TBH I’m tired of worrying about the Dpf all the time and I plan to keep my truck for a long while. I could fire the parts cannon, but then I’m looking at several hundred dollars and potentially no better. I could take it to the dealership, with no emissions warranty or bumper to bumper left and let them charge me an arm and a leg and probably be without my truck for several days, with MAYBE a fix. I am open to suggestions. Super frustrated for sure! Oh and I’ll keep you updated how it goes once I jump in with both feet on the new exhaust. @OLEJOE

I’m anxious to hear about the surgery. That’s odd about the passive regen towing. Did you happen to notice what your EGR values were while towing?

Actually yes, before it jumped into an active Regen, the temp @ aft Dpf was at around 750 degrees, more than enough for a good passive regen and soot levels continued to climb. I run archoil every tank and even just hitting the high way empty, up until last week, passive has not been an issue. Even this morning, another active Regen yet again @ the usual 6grams of soot, on the highway going to work I watched the soot load climb to 7 grams before it finally started to fall. When it gets done it reads 0 grams but starts to bounce back up pretty quickly. I just don’t know. Momma gave me the go ahead, so I’ve all but pressed the purchase button.

With it going into regen so often, it may just be that it’s full of ash that won’t burn out. IDK. It’s just that there are so many things that can make it act like this. Maybe try to find an independent mechanic that knows about these trucks. I definitely would not take it to a dealer. My dealer won’t even fix things covered under warranty. Denies warranty claims.
