2019 Ram Heavy Duty Impressions From A 2016 Owner:

What Does A 4th Generation Owner Think Of The New Heavy Duty?

We have been following the 2019 Ram Heavy Duty since early last year when the first test mules were spotted in heavy camouflage. Later on, we started to realize that the 2019 Heavy Duty would indeed keep the current cab instead of moving to the all-new cab used by the 2019 Ram 1500. It was around that time that we decided to separate the trucks from the 2019 Ram 1500 and started this website moving all the Heavy Duty news over here, instead of on our sister site 5thGenRams.

While many people initially thought that we were incorrect in saying that the trucks would keep the same cab, the trucks were officially revealed last month and do indeed keep the older cab. One of the most common complaints we have heard since then is that the truck is not differentiated enough and would feel the same as the current trucks.

Well, I got my first look at the 2019 Ram Heavy Duty last week at the 2019 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto, Ontario. As a current 2016 Ram owner, I spent a lot of time crawling all over the new Heavy Duty to see what has changed and what remains the same. While the cab and the box are the same as the current truck, the sheet metal is all new from the A-pillars forward. The front end looks aggressive in person with a grille 30% larger than the outgoing truck for improved cooling under heavy loads. The new front end gives the truck a fresh look which combined with the re-skinned tailgate, new rear bumper, and taillights inspired from the 2019 1500 make the truck feel new.

The huge difference though is when it comes to the interior. Sitting inside the 2019 Heavy Duty gave off an entirely different feeling compared to the outgoing truck. While there are some limitations to using the older cab such as not getting the panoramic sunroof or flat rear load floor of the 2019 Ram 1500 these new trucks feel entirely different. The new interior is lifted mostly from the 2019 Ram 1500, and with the new design, higher quality materials and new technology such as the available 12.1-inch Uconnect screen. These trucks are largely improved over what was already considered one of if not the best interiors in the business on the outgoing truck. Not once while I was looking at these trucks at the auto show did they feel dated.
