Stellantis Recalls 38,164 Vehicles For Steering Column Module Issues

16 Nameplates Have Models Affected By Recall...

Stellantis (FCA US, LLC) is recalling approximately 38,164 vehicles because the steering column control module (SCCM) may not be welded properly. This can prevent the driver’s airbag from deploying in a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 208, “Occupant Crash Protection.”

An airbag that does not deploy when intended may result in an increased risk of injury to the driver in certain crashes. Once flexible flat cable (FFC) cable separation occurs, an airbag warning light will illuminate in the instrument panel cluster.

The defective component is the clockspring within the SCCM, which is from Recalled Component, supplied to FCA US LLC by three different SCCM suppliers.

Recall Chronology –

  • On November 9, 2023, the FCA US LLC (“FCA US”) Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (“TSRC”) organization was notified of a potential issue related to an internal weld within SCCMs on some FCA US LLC vehicles.
  • From November 2023 through January 2024, FCA US TSRC conducted an analysis of SCCM failure patterns and vehicle history and determined that the affected vehicles may have been built with SCCMs that have poor weld adhesion between the FFC and busbar.
  • On February 7, 2024, the FCA US TSRC organization recognized a vehicle build issue on certain vehicles related to a condition that can prevent the driver’s airbag from deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, potentially resulting in noncompliance with FMVSS No. 208.
  • On March 7, 2024, FCA US determined, through the Vehicle Regulations Committee, to conduct a voluntary safety recall of the affected vehicles.
