The way it is all beat up around the edges really makes me worry that he actually pulls trailers with his hitch

I don’t hate it. I wish someone made a modern excursion. If there was a 3/4 or 1 ton solid axle SUV I think it would sell.

Looks like there’s about 5’ of cargo boxes sticking out behind that bumper. Some basic understanding of leverage and practical physics really needs to be a requirement for any kind of towing or hauling.

Couldn't tell if it's a 2500 or 3500 but the frame is the same. From the top of my head it should be able to tow around 16k lbs conventional trailer and that is quite a bit of tongue weight behind the rear axle.
Unless those cargo boxes are filled with led I don't think they were a big deal. But we will never know without more info
To add, looking again at the last picture, there appears to be some old rust where the crack developed. As well as a different shine on paint a few inches away from the crack which could indicate some welding been done in that general area and the frame's been repainted.

It's a 2 year old pic and the frame was welded on by the camper mfr.
That crack is next to an aftermarket (camper) vertical frame support.

As brutal said its the fault of the weld. The crappy weld created a fracture point, this is the exact reason you will NEVER see a factory frame weld go straight down the frame they will go at an angle or have a step/ gap between welds its simple metallurgy. It also looks like stick weld which is another issue on its own for the thin frame material
