You got that right. I estimated my pin weight at 5000 thinking I was overestimating. After leaving on a recent trip I ran the rig over the CAT scale. I had done the truck earlier. After crunching the numbers my pin came to 5700. I was surprised. No question about the dually.I would try to get a real world pin weight from other owners of the same model before deciding, but 5th wheel is typically 18-22% of the GVWR when loaded. You can crunch the numbers from the empty weight+your expected load in the trailer too but most people underestimate how much stuff they haul around.
I chose DRW because I did not want to be truck capped on the kind of 5th wheels we may get. We ended up with a riverstone that is north of 16k so I’m glad I did. I do daily drive my DRW with no issues. Drive thrus, parking, it has all worked out. Now if I know I’m going somewhere where it would be tough, we just take the wife’s Bronco.
I’ve been RVing for 35 years, always travel trailers because I like the option of storing stuff under the canopy and SRW because we get a lot of snow in the winter. I prefer to travel light but if I towed a 5th Wheel I would prefer DRW due to the increased stability on the highway.
Welcome long time lurker! Good 1st post.
Agree on the SRW for winter, but wouldn't do DRW unless the 5th was just too much pin weight.
My SRW is very stable.
With over 5K of pin weight, the dually was a no brainer.Same, no complaints on stability at, and even above, SRW RAWR.
