DEF consumption

I'll add my experience towing an enclosed car hauler for snowmobile trip with my 2020 3500 SO Mega cab. Truck had about 5500 miles on it when we left.

Miles: 2788
Gallons of Fuel: 320
Gallons of Def: 11
Fuel MPG: 8.70
DEF MPG: 253
Def to Fuel - 3.43%

Driving around town I think i get around 500-600 MPG for DEF

My first 3800 miles on my 2020 HO has used just about a full tank of DEF. I've only done light towing in this time, so mostly highway driving empty. So roughly 5-600 mpg also.

Last three posts are:
1. 20,000 km or13,000 miles on 1 jug = over 5,000 miles per gallon of DEF.
2. 425 miles per gallon of DEF.
3. 1,000 miles per gallon.

Weird.

#1 is a 2018 truck, different programming and consumption.

Hey guys I joined just for this thread. Im trippin. had new 2016 long tradesman put 160k in 4yrs and consistent 7.5G per 10-12k. 3400h/700h
I just bought 2020 trades in Jan and feeding it def.. have gone thru 17g @ in 7200mi. 169h/64h. (Had 400 demo miles where extra idle hrs from) I stopped paying attention but felt like in regen every 800-1000m
Same driving style. Mix freeway and high elevation off-road.

I just completed 4500 mile trip and I burned 10 gal of def

When DEF is being used, is it a constant injection while driving or only injected during a regen?

I'll add some data to this as well. My 2020 seems to be using a lot of Def as well:

3427 km (2129 Miles) - Added full Mopar Def Jug (Gauge was at half way mark)
6855 km (4259 Miles) - Added full Mopar Def Jug (Gauge was at half way mark)
8935 km (5552 Miles) - Added full Mopar Def Jug (Gauge was at half way mark)

So on average I'm getting roughly 3000 km (1864 Miles) per jug (which is 9.46L or 2.5 US Gal), estimate 6000km (3728 Miles) per tank. All non-towing at present.

I took mine into the dealer and they never did the emissions update when they did the valve body. I am currently watching to see my usage. My last fill up I got right around 3000 miles. For fuel consumption I put anywhere from 80 to 100 gallons of fuel a month in the truck (roughly 20-28 gallons per week?) I did notice on a trip that highway driving is using more. I filled up the def about a week before leaving and round trip I used almost a half tank of def on a 600 mile trip

When I do the math here, from your first addition at 2129 to your last at 5552 (3423 miles), you consumed 5 gallons of DEF.
In that 3423 miles, I'll estimate fuel consumption at roughly 207 gallons (assuming 16.5 MPG).
IF the above is somewhat accurate, your DEF consumption is approximately 2.42% of fuel consumption.

This appears in-line with industry expectations for DEF consumption (2% - 3% of fuel).

Disclaimer: Many assumptions were made for this calculation; without filling the DEF tank completely up each time (the gauge is not very accurate), it's impossible to know if the tank was "as full" after the final addition at 5552 miles as it was after filling at 2129. The above @$$umes it was.

Thanks for that, I guess i won’t fret over it.

Mileage was pretty close! My RoadTrip app says my average over all fill ups is 14.73 L/100km which should be 15.9 Mpg but that includes a lot of short drives when the wife steals it to go barely a mile to work.

My best ever driving from home to Sault Ste Marie (the Soo!) was 11.83 L/100km (19.88 Mpg) which is awesome!

Cheers
Tim

p.s. Now the next item I’ll switch to a different thread is the constant regen of the DPF, seems to do it a lot and the guage always shows zero. Will have to monitor it more closely, might just be all the short trips and when I finally get it for a long one, it gets to regen.

Yea your doing pretty good.... if i go the speed limit 90km/h i can get 10.5 L/100 and your def consumption is on par with mine..... out of curiosity where abouts are you if you bought in the sault

Sorry should have clarified, I bought in Barrie (Ontario) but I live in Innisfil. Had some work to do up in the Soo. Yes I used cruise control and did close to the limit but could not get that low, even in a 3500 they were trying to run me over at that speed lol.

Still those numbers are great, beats my Jeep JK but not quite what my MX-5 can do lol.

DEF usage is constant while driving but at different rates according to temps and load on the engine.
Load on the engine varies according to mph, towing, empty, loaded, city, elevation, etc - so many
DEF and active regens have no relationship. A regen does not use DEF.

Ya I wish I could get-er down to 10.5 ...... my 05 was pretty consistent in that range. Could even dip in the 9’s if I feathered it. Isn’t progress wonderfull.

Ah got ya i bought mine at peel could not beat their prices anywhere

I pick up my 3500 HO from the dealer Sept 14 with a full tank of diesel (50 US gallons tank) and full DEF. To date Ive done 678 miles. 2 days ago the low fuel light came on at 50 miles or so so I put 25 US gallons in it. I noticed my DEF gauge is just a little below 100 %. Is this normal to have so much DEF left after so many miles ? Is this gauge going to plummet on me at an odd ball rate ?

Depends on how you use it but you should expect 500ish mpg with DEF i only have to dump a jug in every 4-5 fuel ups but hard towing will cause an increase in def usage
