NHTSA Opens Investigation On Some 2022 Ram HD Trucks
Probe Comes In Response To 82 Complaints About Chassis Cab Snap Ring Failure...
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into potential transmission failures in select 2022 Ram Heavy Duty Chassis Cabs. This probe comes in response to 82 complaints received by NHTSA regarding the loss of motive power attributed to a malfunctioning K1 snap ring within the vehicle’s transmission system.
The affected models under scrutiny include the 2022 Ram 3500, 4500, and 5500 Chassis Cab trucks. Complaints lodged with NHTSA indicate instances where drivers experienced a complete loss of motive power, particularly at speeds exceeding 25 mph. Such failures render forward gears 1 to 4 inoperable, potentially leaving the vehicle incapacitated and posing safety risks, especially if the truck is heavily loaded or utilized for emergency purposes such as ambulance services or towing.
Upon investigation, NHTSA found that the dislodgment of the K1 snap ring during a failure event compromises the functionality of crucial transmission gears, significantly impacting the vehicle’s operability and safety on the road.
In response to these concerns, the manufacturer, Stellantis (FCA US, LLC) acknowledged the issue and provided technical service bulletin TSB-21-002-23 related to the alleged defect. Furthermore, FCA US has conducted testing, revealing that a warning message will alert the driver in the event of a failure, while gears 5 and reverse will remain functional.
This preliminary evaluation initiated by the NHTSA aims to assess the severity of the problem and determine any potential safety implications for affected vehicles. By investigating these transmission failures, the NHTSA seeks to ensure the safety and reliability of Ram Heavy Duty Chassis Cab trucks, address concerns raised by consumers, and safeguard motorists on the nation’s roads.
Owners of 2022 Ram Heavy Duty trucks experiencing transmission issues are encouraged to report their concerns to the NHTSA.gov website. This will enable the agency to gather comprehensive data and take necessary actions to address the matter effectively. As the investigation progresses, updates will be provided to the public, emphasizing transparency and accountability in resolving automotive safety issues.
