Towing Sway

Too bad you guys had to sidetrack my thread with your childish insults and idiotic posts that had nothing to do with my original question. It’s morons like you that are driving people away from forums to using Facebook groups instead. No wonder the owners of this forum don’t want to invest in making this site work any better.

Back to the topic of towing sway. Towed my boat this past weekend and didn’t have any noticeable sway. The weekend before with the 5er and it had plenty mostly when hitting any type of deviation in the road surface. 5er axles have been flipped for height and I’m running the anderson hitch. Could that be the problem ? Never had that issue with my leaf spring truck and traditional Fifht wheel hitch.

Maybe you don't have enough pin weight?

Is everything on the hitch tight? Any movement?

IMO it’s a bad hitch design, but sway isn’t one of the things that usually gets complained about.

Have you weighed the setup?

Maybe you don't have enough pin weight?

I agree, it’s the leading cause of trailer sway.

I have not weighed the set up. Probably should. Was never an issue with my previous Ram. 5er sits level on the truck and nothing else has changed. All my storage is up front.

Do you have the 2500 air ride?

I have a 2022 2500 ctd ccsb. No factory air ride. I added airbags and compressor trying to help the sway. Truck does have the Carli 2.5” level kit with Fox shocks. Also, I’m running 285/75/R18 ridge grapplers. (35’s). Last tow I set tires to 60psi and bags to 55psi. Both higher than any previous tow. Didn’t seem to make a difference.

Since the truck/trailer doesn’t sway with the boat I am more inclined to think it’s a trailer issue with the 5th wheel, but I would verify everything is tight and properly setup on the hitch.

Check the pin weight distribution. Level doesn’t mean it’s adequate pin weight.

Do a good inspection of the suspension and axles. Look for broken springs, worn bushings, etc.

Then its likely the trailer…. Is the trailer level and tires aired up properly?

Yes trailer sits level. Had to flip the axels with the new taller truck to make that happen. And yes tires are always checked and aired to correct psi before each trip. Going to pull the wheels and tires and inspect all the suspension hardware. Might just replace all the components while I’m at it. Thanks for fall the input

Since you had the axles flipped I’d put a tape measure on then and make sure the alignment is good too.

When you *flipped* them you mean welding new spring perches on the top side of the axle tube not just flipping the axle under the springs right?

Yes. New spring perches, u bolts and plates. Was done correctly. Nothing changed on the alignment at all. Used bolts and spacers to align the new perches with the old ones before welding.

One last note. One thing I notice is more movement in the front of the 5er. Meaning more up and down of the front trailer corners as I watch in my side mirrors. With the old truck I used a standard curt hitch and now have the anderson.

I know all the discussion surrounding the AUH however my 5er is only 8000# and I have bad shoulders so was the best option for now.

Wondering if the movement I see now is only due to the freer movement on the AUH vs a traditional 5er hitch plate ?
Just a thought.

There shouldn’t be any additional movement on an AUH vs a standard hitch when going down the road.

It may articulate more on uneven surfaces, but that’s shouldn’t happen normally.

The added movement could be due to the higher CG of the 5th wheel now.

Gotcha. I’m guessing most of it is due to the added height. Wondering if helper springs or those sumo helpers would help in the 5er
