Moryde Goosetech

I don't know who makes the frames for Grand Design but chances are good it's Lippert. You'll want to make sure whatever goose box you get won't void the frame warranty. I've got the Reese Goose Box and really like it a lot. I've got both the B&W ball which is nice because it and it's chain anchors fit in a bespoke case which sits in the front storage of my 5er. I've also got a Gen Y offset ball that isn't nearly as small and light, nor does it store as easily though it is lightyears better than a regular 5th wheel hitch. There is a newer generation of Gen Y ball that appears to be lighter, has the safety chain hooks incorporated and uses the holes closest to the tailgate. Quite the improvement. I've used the B&W with no problem, but the Gen Y offers a peace of mind that is difficult for me to ignore.
Another reason to choose the Gen Y over the B&W is it provides more room between the tailgate and camper front storage door. This can be important if your approach angle is not perfectly straight on.

There are several versions of Lippert frame(s). I own a 150 series GD(think light-er) and the only approved replacement for the crappy Lippert/Curt Turning Point pin box is the Gen-Y Executive. Sucks for us.

You don't like the Gen Y?

Gen-Y does make a turning point compatible hitch, but I have not seen anything stating Lippert endorses the Gen-Y product. Any reference to where they do endorse it’s use?

Lippert doesn't endorse Gen Y. Although Gen Y had done testing with Lippert, they wanted big money to approve Gen Y Hitches and Gen Y decided it was not a good business decision I guess. I read on some of the Grand Design forums that Gen Y passed the testing with flying colors. But of course this is all forum talk so take it for what you want.

I have a lot of miles on mine.

That's what I was thinking, not officially approved.

No and Reese is only approved probably because Lippert is their distributor - I am sure Reese doesn't want any competition in the "approved" area.

So I do not put a lot of weight in Lippert "approving" a hitch....when money is a driver...

Money is always a driver.

It really only matters if one is concerned about their warranty. My 5th wheel was 13 years old when I added the goosebox, so warranty wasn't a concern.

After much research and phone calls and emails it’s not so cut and dry apparently. I have a spec sheet from Lippert showing several approved replacement pinboxes and the Gen Y *king pinbox is actually approved for Brinkley fivers and toy haulers, as well as Grand Design Solitude and momentum trailers built after 2025. The Gen Y gooseneck version is also now approved with recent frame upgrades by Lippert apparently. No info on the sheet for Reflection line specifically, but according to Gen Y who have been fantastic to deal with, they have never had a frame warranty claim denied as a result of their gooseneck hitch being installed on a Lippert frame. They also claim that not only are their hitches not found to be at fault for any frame issues, but that their hitches significantly reduce frame stress and will prevent issues. They’ve also said they specifically engineered their hitch to meet Lippert specs. I am aware that the reflection line also recently upgraded to a more robust Lippert Omega frame that is more durable. I am actually now leaning towards the Gen Y executive setup with their 2nd Gen offset hitch. Seems tried and true, no maintenance, great customer service, and I feel my warranty concerns are alleviated.

Did they mention Jayco at all?

Not specifically. But I just spoke with Grand Design 20 minutes ago and I know this will be hard to believe but they said they literally had a memo come across their desks this afternoon stating that Grand Design has approved all Gen Y hitches for use in their trailers. And they clarified that it’s their call on the potential warranty issues as Lippert builds the frames to their specs and testing. Funny the timing on it for me as I’m looking into all this as approvals are happening apparently, but this solidifies my decision on the Gen Y and I’ll be ordering it today. But as mentioned regardless of an official approval it seems that using a Gen Y will not affect the warranty anyways unless they attribute it to the frame failure on a claim but that hasn’t happened yet.
