Fuel System Failure?

I'm a new member but Ive been drive Dodge Ram 2500's for a long time. I had a Cummins/Allison. I dumped it (traded it in) after about 18 months because it had that miserable front end problem and the front drive shaft CV joint broke after the recall fix! Anyway, the hair on the back of my neck stood straight up when you said "Got Gas at a Convience Store!" Man you're driving a $60,000-$70,000 truck and you get gas at a stop and rob to save $2.00 on a fill up. A good friend of mine lost the engine in his Corvette after buying a tank of gas at a 7-11. A mechanic at Chevrolet said there was more water in the tank than gas! I always run top tier 93 Octane in my 2014 6.4 litre HEMI. I hear that your mechanic said the fuel was okay. Just something to think about. When I had my Cummins I would drive 10 miles out of my way to get fuel at a top tier name brand station. Unfortunately the front end was so messed up on my truck I dumped it. Yep I considered that it had been in an accident before I bought it. Don't know. Anyway I way i've wasted a group of your time here, but good luck and don't give up on Ram pickups!

Welcome to HDRams!

You misspelled Cummins/AISIN.

:)

My wife wants to buy an automotive rated fire extinguisher to carry in cab of truck, that's pathetic that folks have to fear like that, I'll probably make a sharp maneuver and that thing will take off like torpedo.

fwiw, seriously consider that extinguisher. Just came back from a trip yesterday where an unattended trailer at an adjacent site caught on fire. Thankfully (!) the fire caught up to the water tanks and slowed things just long enough for us to pull the propane tanks, disconnect power, and put out the fire with extinguishers from our trucks and trailers. No injuries at least.

There are some decent vehicle brackets to keep the torpedo factor under control. Have a 15.5# Halotron in one truck now ... that's probably a bit excessive for most cases though :)

Definitly worth the investment. Glad to hear everyone is ok. You just never know, it could be somebody else's dropped trailer or our fuel pump exploding onto a hot exhaust, that's why there called accidents, you just never know. But those propane tanks, few we, that's something that's always scared me, obviously not enough to turn off while we travel as i know most don't but it's always on the back of your mind.

Brewbud, why wouldn't you by a new truck ? it is such a low percentage rate of the fuel pump going bad. I know of 6 trucks that have well over 180,000 miles with not one hick-up with the CP4. and that's just me. Fords has the same pump and most of our subcontractors have the CP4 pump with not one issue and over 125,000 miles.

I already have a new truck on the way. I alluded to the fact that people come to post negative experiences and I expect the failure rate seems higher than it really is because of that. All the same, I have my faithful 2007 in the driveway that I will be parting with so I do have a nagging "uh-oh, what the heck am I doing" feeling

I still have that "what have I done" feeling after selling my trusty 04.5 5.9L, but I needed something bigger both cab and payload.

This is for all you Ram/Cummins cp4 sceptics:
I am on my 7th Ram, I have run through all the troubled spots through the years 5th gear, several times, death wobble, poor brakes, you name it, I've been through it. Ram , with no question is building a more durable truck every model, But my 2019 4500 has "taken the cake". I am on my third cp4.2
First one came apart at 29,000 miles, second one 38,000 miles. I do not abuse the truck, nor is the truck over-clocked in anyway. Mopar did reimburse me for rentals but the down time was excessive. I am hoping this will last through the warranty and at that time I will have to make a decision if I should covert to cp3 or roll the dice with my cp4.2. All said, would I buy a Ram again????? Probably!!!!

The skeptics are everywhere. Just out of curiosity, was there any sign of water or contamination in either failure?

My buddy had his gasser at a dealer for clunking cab mounts the other day, and he chatted up the diesel tech, who he has known for some time. He pointed to two trucks there with CP4 failures at very low miles waiting on parts. No contamination or water issues. Not the first he has seen either, and this is not a megadealer.

This is a black eye for Cummins and Ram.

I finally got my Ram ‘19 2500 back after the CP4 failure (4+ months of waiting for parts) When I got to the dealership they had the rear seats just thrown in the back, not even bolted down, covered in dirt and grease.

The radio, backup camera and gps stopped working before I even got home... Had to take it back to dealership again...now, I’m on the Ram waiting list for a new radio.

Why did they take out the back seat for a engine problem?

Fake news. You're new members/posters. According to the old grumpers on this forum, CP4 failure is a myth. You're all bots and spys from Ford and GM forums that have come to tarnish the brand!

Im looking forward to some stats that compare the New CP4 failures compared to Classic CP4.
Fingers crossed but im not putting on money on it.

It’s true. They always join the same day their CP4 quits, post some horror story then never return. Hey if Russia can influence the election then ford and chev can troll Ram diesel sites because they are threatened by rams overtaking the 2500-5500 market.

You are right this is a "Black eye" for dodge ram and cummins. However I do think they have discovered that. Now we will see what the new ones will bring out. I have heard they will be reverting back to cp3's but that's a rumor as far as I know.
As far as water, there was no indication of water, in fact if there was, I think they would have tried to blame the failure on bad fuel.
No pre-warning of failed parts what so ever, just died,
First breakdown, I was idling smack in the middle of a Nevada level one DOT inspection. My Luck, Nice officer gave me an Out of Service violation and said I had better get this truck moved before he closes for lunch or he will impound me and move it for me. Nice guys!
Second time I was 100 miles west of Phoenix, Az on I-10 at 2:30 in the afternoon on July 28th it was 114 degrees that day and a tow truck finally got to me at 9:30 that night. I had 4 warm 12oz bottles of water with me that day. I was just a little irritated by the end of the day.
I'm 63 years old, I'm lucky I made it through that ordeal. Thanks Cummins!!!
Once in the dealer, I was told I was the 7th Ram the Mechanic has diagnosed with Pump Failure. By the time I picked up my truck there were 7 more trucks waiting for pumps and injectors to be repaired.
My truck was finally repaired and picked up on October 10. So at this point my New $70K ram has literally spent more time in the shop then on the road.
Again, would I buy another Ram? Probably.

100 miles West of PHX puts you roughly between the Bouse rest area and Vicksburg Rd. Pilot station. Not much around out there! I hope your troubles are behind you.

I really hope Cummins sees the error of their ways in choosing a well-known dud for a major component.

No, I was at mm71 still west of the pilot I think. Nothing within walking distance for miles and closest town is tonapah, which isn't saying much.

Here’s my proof, I’ll wait for you to upload your proof that people/consumers are trying to “influence” anything...other than the flavor of your fan boy koolaid. A 75k dollar truck didn’t make it 6,500 miles before it broke down, almost 5 months in the shop, and it’s still not fully repaired.

Again, I’m not a brand fanboy...this can happen to any manufacturer, it’s how the manufacturer handles the issue. At the very beginning of this I asked to speak with a RamCare supervisor (while I still had an open case)...my ramcare agent (Chris)called me back to say “his supervisors had nothing to say to me”. Please explain how that’s customer service?
