Crusty's 75th Annv PW #1590 build/mods adventure

You have no idea.
Update and details soon.
But the job is done.
I also installed the rear thuren track bar on my non-Power Wagon. No broken bits and the drilling was not too bad, I sprayed the bit with WD40 to keep it cool and took my time. Everything lined up really nicely and I did not have to redrill the hole that gave you the most trouble. Maybe thuren should make a Power Wagon specific version and make it easier ... ?

Does the Power Wagon come stock with the spacer between the bump stop and frame in the back? I see it in the photos. How about the front bump stop, is it also different from non Power Wagons ?

Yes, everything on mine is basically stock.
Only changes are front end track bar, drag link, tie rod. Rear track bar. Fox shocks all around and stabilizer. 35" tires. AMP steps.

And I agree, a PW specific bracket would be nice, but would probably increase the price. But knowing what I know now, it would worth it.

I used oil on all the holes.but I also used a high torque Milwaukee plug in drill. So it would bind a little, rip the drill out of my hand, then break the 1/2" bit.

On a non PW, it's not a problem because you are basically enlarging the hole. On the PW, you have to drill a new hole that goes partially into the factory hole. The PW factory hole is higher than the non PW, which the bracket is made for.

Well I got the new shoes put on today.

But seems things just keep getting worse. Got a worse vibration now than I had with the old tires. Mostly at 55MPH. Going to have them recheck the tires tomorrow as this looks like a balance issue. Maybe he forgot one bag of balance beads in one of the tires.

Once that is figured out and fixed, then we will move on to an alingment.

Also found out I need new break pads, at least on the front. So going to go ahead and do a full job with the power stop tow break set up of pads and rotors all around.

Ok, after 2 days at the tire shop, here's the final results.

Alingment:
Had a little toe in. Worked best we coukd and wound up with .07 toe out. Tech told me he had been trying for 2 years to get them to have the machine calibrated. Every time he turned the wheel then went back to center, he'd get a different reading. It shouldn't have changed. So this was the best he could do. Close to Thuren specs. I'll be keeping an eye on tire wear.

Balance:
So first thing I had them do was pull a tire and put it on the balancer just to see if it would balance with the beads. I've seen where it worked, I've often hears it wont work.
Well I don't think it worked.
So had them pull out the beads and got it to balance. Almost 5 ounces on 2 of the tires. A little high.
But the other 2 tires, one took 9 and the other 12 ounces, way too much. And probably the reason I had vibrations. I used 6 ounces bags of beads in each tire. Also one bag did not fully open.

But in the end, almost all of the vibration is gone. Just a little bit around 70MPH.
Also noticed that the tires have a high pitched whine to them.

I contacted the seller to see if I can 2 replacement tires? Or a full refund and I'll go get some AT4W or KO2 or 3s.

With my Klevers one of them did take a good bit of weight, but after i balanced them, for good measure I dumped a 3.3oz scoop of balance beads in there as well. They ride perfectly smooth. I figure the balance issues probably have a lot to do with the extremely aggressive sidewall treads.

Btw, where's pics of the tires on the truck?

That's what I originally thought, till someone pointed out the Thuren specs and I read them a little closer.
0-.05 is there spec, so no negative toe.
Exactly. Negative toe is out. You’re backwards. The spec is no negative toe. 0 to .05 in

No way your alignment shop should’ve let you leave with toe out. Have you ever been snow skiing by chance?

Negative toe is toe out, regardless of the color. The color is what’s programmed in the machine, and not always correct (which is why we use Thuren specs).

-0.07 is a lot of toe out, I can’t imagine it drives very well especially around corners.

It drives fine. They didn't give me a printout. I'll call the shop tomorrow. Worse case, I'll measure and adjust if necessary.
Won't be perfect, but close.
