Crusty's 75th Annv PW #1590 build/mods adventure

Well looking more at the Vision wheels and talking to my buddy, I dont think the rims are what I'm really looking for. They are too bright for the look i want.
So I'm doing some research, and looking at keeping my stock rims, but painting the ring, and maybe the center cap, the same color of the truck.
I've been thinking of doing this all the way back shortly after getting the truck, so it's not a new idea to me.
And I've found the factory paint.

I think the bronze looks good with the Del Monico. Some wheels look more gold though.

I almost went with the Racelines in bronze. I like their bronze but I saw them on a flame red and didn't like the combo. On your color though they would look great.

I've already made my decision and have ordered the new rim. Or should I say slightly used rim, for $400 shipped to my door. A lot better than the $1100 from the dealer.

Fuel does have a nice set of dark bronze rims that I like, but they only come in 22's. I want to stick with 17's as I already have new tires on it and the ride is better.

So after almost a month of searching, my tire guy finally found me a new tire. I also bought a used take off OEM rim for less than half of a new one
Got everything mounted with a new OEM sensor and installed.
Had them check the alignment and sure enough, it was way out, -.34 total toe. Reset it to .06 total toe. Everything else looked good.
So I'm now back on the road in good condition with 2 new tires on the front.

So last night, I started cleaning and sanding the trim ring off of the beat up wheel. Wanted to see how hard it was going to be to clean and sand the powder coating to prepare it for painting. And then use it for a test piece for the paint process.
Well guess what, its not powder coated, just basic prime, paint and clear. Didn't take long with 150 grit on a random orbit sander to get down to the primer.
So tonight, I'm going to just throw it into the sand blaster and see how long it takes to blast it and remove all of the paint. probably easier and quicker.
Then I can lay down a good coat of primer, paint and clear and install it to see if I like the look.

Well day 2 on the project was a bust.
First off, after doing some sand blasting, I determined that yes, the ring is powder coated. The blaster would not take it off, but 150 grit on a random orbit sander makes fairly quick work of it.

But the big bust was my test paint. I used Dupli color dark garnet red Pearl, paint code PRV, which supposed to match the delmonico red Pearl. Well it's a lot darker. Or I put on too many coats trying to get full even coverage.

I still have some paint left, so I'm going to try again and see if I can do thinner coats and less of them and still get full coverage.

If not, then I'll be back on the search for different paint.

OK, finally got an update.
So I decided to go with dip your car to paint the rims and bead locks. Went back and forth and finally decided on Bronze gold wheel kit. But of course it was back ordered when I placed the order a few months back. But I got notice last week that my kit has finally shipped. So if it gets here this week, guess what I'll be doing this weekend. o_O

Here is the wheel kit.

And I'm going to use their Wicked Wine for the bead lock ring. About as close as I could find to match the Delmonico Red Pearl.

Got to get some black lug nuts now to finish off the look.

Should look great when its done!

I also wanted a bronze / gold wheel on my red truck, so much so that I bought the paint and two part clear coat to paint my factory wheels. Then I tried experimenting with the plastidip stuff and decided it does not go well with my two tone. I think your truck without the black stripe, it will look good. Opt for the hyper dip paint if they have it, it lays down much better than the original stuff.

The bronze is their Hyperdip wheel kit as I posted.
The Wicked Wine does not come in the Hyperdip. But I did order the glossifier to spray over it to try and match the gloss of the truck paint.
We will see what happens.

Ok, let's see if it will load pictures this time.
4 hours into the project.
All 4 rings are painted and cleared with a glossifier. Two tires are done and back on the truck. Still need to do the rears and center caps as well as get some black lug nuts.
It's not an easy task. But it is a DIY task. Just takes time and patience

So here goes.

Having trouble posting pictures.‍

Tried to paint the center cap and leave the RAM logo black, but it didnt work. Got to figure out a different way.View attachment 42990
Great job. I did the hyperdip to my old Camaro's chrome wheels. Toughest part was torquing the lugs back on and not stripping the dip off the sides of the lug holes. Looks like it went perfect for you.

It went OK. Not sure if I like the product or not. Maybe I didnt put enough on? Maybe it was because I was in the sun?
I got a few Nick's putting them on. And a few bad spots.
Looks good from 5 feet.
But dont look too close.

Agree on the don't look too closely. I sprayed in layers. Not too much and not too many layers. Honestly, I did it until I find the right set of black wheels on the car. Wait until you try to clean them. Sure, you can do it. Really have to be careful though. Especially if you get caked on mud. You tube has videos on how to properly clean them.
