Crusty's 75th Annv PW #1590 build/mods adventure

Finally got in touch with insurance. Seems their app for doing pictures doesn't work. Got them to let me email them pictures. Told them I want to do the work.
Sent them a list of parts.
Rear tail light lense.
Rear bumper
Rear bumper upper pad.
Rear bumper lower left pads.
Receiver hitch.
Bed step.
All mounting plates and bolts.

We will see what they say.

Finally got an answer back from Chassis unlimited. They all have the step. Its a production thing. can't get one without it.

Long story, contacted them on FB. They sent an email link aid ask their tech. Went round and round a few times telling him the link didn't work, even if I manually typed it in. reply was worked for them. I finally asked, can you just get me a yes or no? If yes, then I'll call them. 2 days later I get the no reply and an excuse/ Sounds more like they don't want to do any custom or someone else is doing the cutouts or welding.

Insurance called, they are sending me a check. $2800. Time to go shopping.

It looks like that bumper is available in raw steel so if you like it other than the step pockets you could have a local weld shop cut them out and close up the hole.

Guess I could do that. Then have it powder coated.

But just checked their website. Same price for powder coated or plain steel.

I assume you already looked, but Thuren has released their high clearance rear bumper for the 19+ trucks. I think it fits nicest of any rear aftermarket bumpers if you're looking for something sleek.

I'll take a look. Didnt like anything I saw at CJC.

Yea, looked at the Thuren bumper. While it looks good and checks all the boxes, I'm not a fan of the way they trimmed the bedsides.

I like the look quite a bit.

But I found the price, pics and description laughable. They show pics of the bumper with parking sensors installed and then write “don’t worry about the pics, the park sensors don’t work with this” I’m not sure but maybe this Means they couldn’t figure it out and gave up and didn’t bother to take new pics of the actual production bumper. If I’m going to pay that much for a bumper it needs to be more well thought out such as the AEV which is very well thought out.

So some thoughts here.
The rear bumper literally bolts to a plate bolted to the frame with 2 bolts on each side and 2 bolts behind the license plate that bolt to a plate on the receiver hitch.

The receiver hitch sandwiches the frame between 2 plates and that is thru bolted thru the frame. 3 bolts per side.

So that got me to thinking. While a new bumper may be cool and all, how well with the D ring shackles hold up if doing a serious pull when the bumper is only bolted with a few bolts? So all of the pull will be on the bolt head and threads.

If I stick with the stock bumper, then I can get a D ring shackle mount on a hitch block that will go into the receiver. I'd think that would be much stronger since all of the bolts and the hitch pin would be used in a double shear situation and not a pulling situation.

I got a message from a buddy who has a prototype set of mounts for me for to mount a set of Baja Design lights into the stock bumper. Just got to provide feedback and pictures of mounting them.

So am I better off staying with a stock bumper and using a hitch D ring shackle?

Almost certainly better.

Your truck sees dirt enough that is just buff out what I could from the bruise and pocket that money. It’s gonna get more bumps. The truck looks fine from the damage pics in my opinion. Don’t forget to get a check for diminished value as well.

Naw, needs a new bumper, It's buckled right in the muddle. And the receiver hitch was damaged as well. he hit it pretty hard. But I'm going to just buff out the paint, even though they paid me to get it repainted. maybe a little touch up paint on the corner near the tail gate. But no one will ever see it unless I tell them. Bumper on the left side is hitting the body and rubs on the step some, so going to replace it. And since I tow, figured better safe than sorry, so new receiver as well. But I can find OEM cheaper than what they paid me. They paid dealer prices. ;)
