CP4 Rattle Vibration Noise (Video Uploaded)

Have you considered taking the truck to an independent shop for an opinion - someone with a wealth of diesel engine know-how?

I did and this is what they told me about my truck.

I presented that info to the dealer and they are basically are saying no codes no work on your truck. My truck now has a deceleration rattle in the pump like a bad bearing going out on top of the constant rattle it makes but the dealer says sounds similar to other 6.7's. I have listened to about 6 other 2019-2020 6.7's and you can barely hear the pump working on them.
 
Ram and Cummins are playing with fire with this. The CP4 is a known piece of garbage with a long history. I almost didn't order my truck because of it, but I figured Cummins wouldn't risk it if they hadn't improved something. If these pumps start failing, and they choose to play the denial game, they will go down in flames. Cummins is what kept Dodge in the truck business, and it would be a shame if a mutual bean-counter decision ruins it all.
 
Today I stop at my third Ram dealer to purchase L/R rear valance for my oem bumper since I had to remove 2 pieces of the oem unit to mount the backup sensors on my Fab Four rear bumper since I might put the oem bumper back on and get rid of this truck. While I'm there I drive into the service department and I'm greeted by the service manager. I ask him can he listen to my cp4 pump and the constant rattle and decel rattle it makes. He asks me to pop the hood, I fire it up and slightly rev it up and down from idle to 1500 rpm's and let it return to idle multiple times. He then tells me let me go get a tech, about 5 minutes goes by and he returns and asks me to fire it up again. He says OK yours is definitely has a rattle and doesn't sound right and that I could not hear a rattle on another 2019 2500 Limited that just had its complete Diesel fuel system replaced under his car insurance since he put gasoline in it and ran it. The service manager told me parts and labor was 24k to fix his new truck with 1200 miles on it. I also asked him if I could listen to the other truck and he says no problem, he fires it up and you could barely hear the pump in the truck. I think that guy optioned for just about everything he could on that truck.

He says lets bring it in and find what's going on with your truck and we made an appointment for next Tuesday, so I hope maybe I will get a service tech that can do more than just look at his computer and say no codes no troubles. It reminds me of a quote I heard on the Holmes on Homes TV show that the HVAC guys would say after checking for gas leaks on a gas line install on a heater or stove "No Bubbles No Troubles".

After hearing the 24k price tag to replace the complete fuel system parts and labor today I can see why FCA try's to blame bad Diesel fuel to get out of having to pay for it. So I say to everyone keep your gas receipts when and where you buy Diesel fuel for your records to prove them wrong so your insurance can go fight with FCA. And try to buy from Top Tier stations if you can. I have been buying from Costco and I have been told by the manager there they get 5 truck loads a day delivered at that Costco.

A gasoline powered truck is sounding so much better right now.
 
Contaminated fuel aside, from '03-'18 there was basically NONE of this crap with the old reliable CP3 pump.

I felt the same way you do on the CP4 pump as why would they put that on there and almost stayed away and now here we are, when I was at Dave Smith Motors I drove a white Power Wagon at the same time and I now regret not getting the Power Wagon now. I had a 2019 Ram 1500 that had nothing but problems, the worst was a musty mold smell they could not get rid of on floor heat only that ended up giving me chronic sinusitis and FCA refused to give me a new truck even thou it had been in the shop for over 50 days in a year. I could not take the smell anymore and not sure why I bought another Ram Product after that.

Roger that - my bad. Hope this 3rd dealer is not just beating the drums. Did the "Ram Cares" fraternity get engaged with you on this? If they did and filed a case number, it'll be interesting to see how this 3rd dealer deals with that.

Indeed! It boggles the grey mass to consider that FCA would risk the integrity of one of it's premium money makers by employing a substandard component that when failed, is hideously expensive to repair. I can't believe they would risk a scenario whereby they would casually dismiss failures, wherever they may be occurring, on bad fuel. That would imply, depending on the fleet failure rate, that all fuel is bad? And if that's the case, why are they in the diesel business?

Yes Ram Cares reached out to me and opened a case for me, I have a rep and case # but he says he can't do anything for me if the first 2 dealer can't find any codes and they refused to bring in the area service rep that specializes in things like this due to NO Codes. They hear the rattle my truck makes but no codes = no work on your truck at the first 2 dealers and are putting it down to sounds similar to other 6.7's but mines a little noisier.

3rd dealer finally says mine does not sound like the one they just replaced the complete fuel system on so lets bring it in and look at it and use a stethoscope and find where the rattle is coming from, maybe idle pulley, clutch fan or cp4 pump but all the noise points right from the cp4 pump. Currently my truck runs fine but sounds horrible and does not give me good feeling taking it on a trip in the winter and get frozen out in the middle of Montana or such when it breaks down on me waiting for the tow rig to show.

I have my Fab Four front bumper and lights waiting to be mounted and finish the Aux switch wiring but have been putting that off just in case this thing goes down the road.

Apparently mine does the same thing. This was on high idle but you can plainly hear it with normal idle also. I thought it was my tensioner pulley but when I lifted the hood it was readily apparent where the noise was coming from.

I wish mine was that quiet, mine makes a horrible constant rattle you can hear from 15 feet away with the hood down and is louder than the Diesel engine and is now producing an extra decel rattle like it has a bearing going out as well. It goes in Tuesday at the 3rd dealer.

Does yours sound like mine in this video when you walk up on it with the hood down?

 
Here is the part number 68444767AA and cost of a new CP4 pump, you can see why they try to blame bad Diesel fuel.

I've come to find out that the dealer I bought my truck from pretty much doesn't have a diesel tech anymore.

Mine sounds like yours at high idle. Mine is nowhere near as loud as @BighornHDRam 's
 
I believe it might be normal I took 3 videos, reg idle high idel (in the high idle vid. The noise is in and off b/c of the bad angle of speaker it is a constant noise), and in one of them I get a on off type clicking maybe a compressor of some sort??...but can't figure out how to post them

You have to get it uploaded to a media a site like YouTube or facebook to add a link to it to publish your video. There is no way to directly load a video which I find very frustration as not everyone has YouTube or facebook.

Mine goes in tomorrow at the 3rd dealer and hope we can find out why it's so noisy, if not this thing is going down the road.
 
It might be normal..
The first video is reg idle...

Second is high idle not sure why the ticking noise comes and goes in real life it's CONSISTENT not on and off....

The last two videos are another ticking I am hearing which is very annoying could it be a compressor??
