CP4 Rattle Vibration Noise (Video Uploaded)

I think the frequency is too high to be valve lifters. Seems more in time with the dreaded CP4.

Alright, I had my appointment today to have my CP4 pump looked at and after having the Team Service manager listen to another 2020 2500 that was quiet as a cucumber with the hood open and mine you could hear from over 10 feet away rattling away that we both confirmed. The 4 different techs at the dealership claimed it is (Normal) wow what a surprise, they claim some are louder than others, but when is a high pressure fuel injection pump supposed to be louder than a Diesel engine. While in park if you give it a little bit of gas it has a weird rattle on deceleration back to idle like its has a air pocket in the system. I guess now when it blows up Ram Is going to be on the hook for what ever damage this pump does and I tried being pro active on this.

I say if your pump sounds anything like mine I would at least take it in and get it documented so when it does fail you are not to be blamed for bad diesel and be put on the hook for the cost of repair

Mmm...
With the hood open, I can hear similar clicking to your video - but my recording sounds much different than yours. Actually the noise is more noticeable in person than it is in my recording. It is kinda irritating - but normal I guess.
If the hood is closed and strand next to the engine (where I recorded the video) I can barely hear the clicking. I wouldn't notice it if I wasn't listening for it.

Of course you video - it sound more than obvious .

This 2020 truck I listened to today you could barely hear the cp4 pump, just a slight clatter from it, then you go to my truck 10 feet away with hood closed and it sounds like a bunch of tappets out of spec louder than the diesel engine they claim (Normal).

I'm really regretting not getting that Power Wagon instead, I drove both the same day but ended up on the Diesel on longevity..

Here is a walk up video to my truck while it is running, the wind rushing noise is the fan cycling but if you listen to my truck it has a weird vibration rattle noise always. At in between 12-13 seconds the cp4 pump gives out one of the those intermittent louder rattles that I turn around to catch more coming from the engine bay. And they call this normal sounding, does everybody else Ram Diesel with the CP4 sound like this?

And they say the new 19-20 engine are supposed to be quieter than the earlier models, my truck is all stock with 2k miles. I'm thinking I should of gotten the Power Wagon now as this thing looks to be a long term dealer visit truck.

I had a friend upload this video as well for me.

Mine too. I'd always opined that the RR Merlin V12 was the sweetest sounding internal combustion engine ever produced. Cummins is a close second...

IDK but I would have to put my hand up for the Ferrari 412 t2 for pure engine sweetness sounding internal combustion engine. I have this as my ring tone on my phone. I actually meet Frank Williams (He owns Williams F1 Team) in Detroit F1 Race in 1987 in the pits before I went into the Marine Corp and took a picture of him and spoke with him for a few minutes. I got alot of cool pic of the pits of car parts there, not sure how I got back there since it was over 40 years ago but was way cool at 18.

#2 Renault V10 F1 V10 F1 engine as #2

#3 the Ferrari V10

And then the the Ferrari V10
Very kewl but too hi-strung. And... it's a subjective thing. This is music:

That's disappointing but I'm not surprised. I too have been at the wrong end of the "it's normal" song and dance. Very frustrating...

I love airplanes to, I love the F-14 Tomcat as a kid, I have plans I bought years ago to build a F-14 from Model Air Plane News.

Nope.
The deep growl of a cummins is one of the satisfying aspects of ownership. I hope you get this sorted out somehow.

I read somewhere that a weak seal in the system could allow air in and cause a cp4 to make noise. It pointed to a kinked 0-ring on the fuel filter. It didn't lead but under pressure it sucked air. That was on an older ford. FWIW

injust took my 3500 to the dealership. Talked to the diesel shop manager. He told me thats a normal sound for the cp4 pump. He even said he was surprised when FCA went with the cp4 because of how quiet the Cummins is now all you hear is the pump. He thinks 2020 trucks might not have it. Also mentioned he’s only warrantied 2 engines for CP4 failures in the last 5 yrs. S
So Now I have it on record I brought it in just in case. Guess now we wait.

2020’s are already out and do have the CP4. The rams have only had the CP4 since ‘19 so unless he works for ford also then I’m not sure what pumps he has warrantied over the last 5 years.

That's good that you also got yours documented as well, I don't know what they are saying normal. Last Friday I was at the dealer and the service manager and I listened to a 2020 2500 and you almost couldn't hear the pump with your head stuck into the engine and then there's mine you can hear 15-20 feet away rattling away with the hood closed. Lately if it sits briefly and you fire it back up it's producing some extra intermittent rattling along with the usual rattling noise.

Can't wait for it to let loose, today I put some extra warm clothes for when I go to the gym rehabbing bilateral shoulder replacements from the VA in the truck for that day when it happens to stay warm while I wait for the tow rig to show to haul this POS off. I really wished I gotten the Power Wagon now.

Just remember this is all Normal

Alright I have some follow up, yesterday I stopped by a reputable Indy Powerstroke shop in my area to listen to my CP4.2 pump since Ford has been using these for a while, after listening to mine for a few he tells me to take it back and it should not sound like that. He tells me what it will do is start to throw codes for low fuel rail pressure and may or may not just quit working or just start sounding even worse. Today I get it back into the dealer that had to do a bunch of work on my 2019 1500 and it was in the shop close to 50 days in 1 year and I had had enough with it and Ram would not put me in a new truck so I bought the 2500.

After having the service manager look at it and listening to the ticking rattle along with extra intermittent rattle he brings it to his Diesel master tech and he listens to it, of course the first thing that comes out is bad Diesel fuel with 2300 miles and I tell them I have been buying top tier Diesel from Costco or Chevron and I have receipts except for what Dave Smith Motors put in so that's out the window. They bring in a brand new 2019 2500 off the lot and park it behind mine and compare and determine mine is making a ticking noise not heard in the new 2019 2500 on the lot. They document that it has been making this noise since new and are going to bring in the area service tech that specializes in stuff like this to determine what to do next with my truck.

If they try to put this down to bad Diesel fuel and not covered under warranty I'm done with Diesels if you can't buy Diesel fuel anywhere and drive more than 2k miles on a engine that should outlast the truck. What's the point of having 2 2 micron fuel filters for if contaminants are going to kill the CP4.2 pump in that amount of time. I'm not sure if you all know but to replace the complete fuel system after a CP4 pump failure is around 10k.

Something caught my eye when looking at the printout the dealer gave you. You said they confirmed your pump was louder. They snuck a line in the report that says, “Listened to another new 6.7L and the noise was similar.” Seems kind of shady that they’re putting on paper that there was no difference. Just wanted to make sure you noticed that discrepancy.

Subscribed... Gonna have to listen to mine more carefully it does make a click noise but nothing like whats In That video

I was told yesterday since at the moment my truck is not throwing any codes but is making this horrible rattle noise and rattle noise on deceleration from the cp4 pump that I can hear while driving they are not even going to bring in the area rep to even look at my truck due to no codes. My truck sounds horrible and Ram's service is horrible at best.

Ram is just kicking this down the road until it blows up or produces some codes and then probably try to blame bad Diesel when it goes just like they did when I had it in a couple weeks ago at 2300 miles but I keep all my receipts from top tier stations. They claim they sent some info off to some engineers to look at but who knows if that is true or not. or when they will get back to me.

I think I'm going to start looking at the new Ford 7.3 and get away from Diesel and Ram all together but I hate the Ford seats as I hated them in my 2017 F250 I had.

Ram cares wish to chime in???? I checked mine this morning not load at all maybe a lil ticking but nothing to be concerned about now

The good ole days of a competent common sense auto mechanic being able to diagnose a rattle noise in an engine are over, they all rely on the computer. No codes then there must not be a problem then move along. Today my rattle they told me it must be the new hydraulic lifters that loose pump up over night and I get the rattle on cold start up that maintains all day, and my decel rattle is the cp4 pump dropping pressure off throttle that sounds like a bearing going bad. All I know is my cp4 pump with the hood closed is louder than my Diesel engine idling and rattling away.

But they say all is good and can't do anything until it throws some codes, sorry.

I'm So Glad I went back to a Diesel truck, not!!!
