The Other Vehicle

building door bars for my rig has been on the back burner for too long. Decided to tackle that project today.

I had a 9’ stick of tube laying around and I wanted to get the job done without buying more tube. Careful calculations got me there with almost no tube to spare.

I’m sure you’ll find a use for them…

It's technically a vehicle. Out riding the Oregon Trail the other day.
Gravel bikes are a game changer, aren't they. I was using my mountain bike up until 2 years ago, nice rugged old bike and good in some rough stuff but we'd do rail trails or dirt/gravel roads and I couldn't keep up with my wife, just too slow and heavy. Bought a gravel bike and not only so much better in those conditions, it's way better than my old road bike on paved roads.

That looks like some spectacular riding!

Wow I have never seen one of those before. Those grips are throwing me off. It's like a hybrid road/mountain bike.

See quite a few gravel bikes out here and the riders always look like they are getting the snot beat of them compared to guys on a MTB, even hard tails like I ride.

They really are. This one is a bit more “adventure” than just gravel, what with 42mm tires, cushcore inserts, and a dropper post. I’m also running an Eagle Transmission rear drivetrain so it climbs up anything. It’s seen a lot of single track and rough terrain, and a bunch of gravel races and pavement riding too. I have a full squish MTB but anymore it really only comes out if I’m going to be riding in really rough stuff. Hell, I even jump the thing. I think my record on it is something like 18’ jump at 26 mph, over half a second air time. Underbiking is a blast.

You're a much more serious rider than I am! I don't ride nearly as much as I should, but do really enjoy it. We'll do a mix of pavement and dirt roads at times, rail trails, some gravel areas. No races and definitely no jumps! I now need to look up a few of the features you mentioned.

AH64ID, no question a mountain bike with suspension can cushion the ride. My old mountain bike doesn't have suspension, I've had days when I got off and could barely use my hands because my forearms are so sore. I have found the gravel bike to be pretty decent on the body, and I tend to run tires pretty hard because I'm over 200 lbs. and prefer the low rolling resistance to a bit more bounce.

@Rockcrawlindude ive been keeping an eye out on super cheap possible crawlers. found one finnaly for 500$. been out of the game since i sold my tube buggy off on 44 tsl's so picked this up. low milage v8. sterling 10.25 rear. dana 50 up front.

i need to see what is out there these days for parts. im a chevy guy for crawlers at heart with some toyota mixed in. so on the ford side not sure what there is for doublers ect. so time to learn.

Plans are

Lose the bed
Fuel cell
dove tail the front
Boat sides (it gets rid of rust in the process lol)
bumpers
12k Winch (Sitting in the shed)
42 inch somethings
Drive flanges
thin out the leaf spring packs
Shackle flip

Im going to sell the plow off of it, wheels, tires. bed. roll those funds into bead locks. i have a dana 300 with northwest clocking ring kit, and other crap to sell too. so in the end this will be a mild and maybe free build for the rocks.

Man that’s gonna be awesome. I’ll keep an eye out for some good deals and ideas. I have a handful of ford buddies.

Sounds like a good starting point and a good plan. I’m following along for the progress

so some of the stuff ive been looking at today has been fairly simple stuff. Shackle flip kit for the rear with longer shackles, adjust the pinion angle from there. I might see about swaping to the long chevy springs for the flex aspect of them. its what i ran in my k5 on tons. since its crusty im not going to go high with it, so low COG with possibly 42's with trimming.

Go full hydro. the cheap way would be seeing if a chevy pump to a Tractor supply ram with a used oribital from something.

ORD sells the adapters for a 203/205 doubler.

the front will be something to figure out. may have to do a 4 link setup.

the other odds and ends i have laying around will go on it. i have a york OB compressor and a 12k winch sitting on a shelf. so will have to build basic bumpers there for the winch. and make a bracket to put the pump on the motor, and i have a Tank that might work.

i have plans lol. i want to do front digs, so triple stick doubler, but i dont think the Dana 50 will hold up to that lol.

the other thing, anything i do i want to be able to go to any napa, carquest, oreilys or where ever and be able to get parts for this when its built. I plan to take this up and down the east coast, over to kentucky and beyond.

that said, i also plan on adding alot of metal to the frame to make it last. my K5 broke its frame twice, the second time when i rolled down 4 6 foot drop off's on my roof lol

I like the plans so far but For the time and money you’ll put into a good doubler setup you should start budgeting for an atlas and make your life easier. They’re under $3k and 5:1 is probably close (or better than) where you’d be with that doubler setup. They’re building them fairly quickly these days, too. Filthy motorsports sells them 10% less than advance adapters so call them

i agree.

having been in the offroad scene for close to two decades, i might have some friends with spare used stuff from KOH and various other events they have attended. Budget is the goal. i think i have some 203 stuff and some adapters in a shed somewhere. i have a transmission, and a dana300 with a clock kit to sell, and some other junk. im excited. lol. the expensive part is the wheels and tires. once i get everything set to where i want it, ill see how big i want to go.

now im also going to say, im not a fab guy. so this will be a machine people will look at and know the guy that built it is great at booger welds :P

Gonna be awesome man. I won’t judge your welds if you don’t judge mine
