The Other Vehicle

My wife has a Subaru ... and all 3 of my kids ... and my sister ... and her 2 kids ... Here in NH they have to be one of the most popular cars on the road. And I have to say, great in snow, great to drive, tons of room for the size they are. Really impressed with the brand, and the bang for the buck in snowy rural areas is hard to beat.

My biggest issue with Subaru is they've all gone to CVT transmissions and I hate driving a CVT.

Also, to get close (not nearly all) the same features incl 3-row seating would be the very top of line Ascent at more than $2K more than the Kia.

The Kia has WAY more tech and safety tech than the Suby offers.

No argument, I think the Kia's are pretty impressive too. And I'm not a Subaru rah rah guy, if I sounded like that I didn't mean to, really was just saying I'm surrounded by happy Sub owners.

I have an interesting comparison on older and newer CVT's. My daughter has a 2011 Forester, and it's pretty wound up on the highway, I think over 3000 rpm at speeds over 70, and just generally kind of buzzy. While a great value of a car for a 22 year old, I can't say I'd enjoy driving it very much. My wife has a 2023 Forester, and the smoothness and easy highway cruising are night and day better. Maybe not surprising for 12 years newer, but changed my view of CVT's a bit, like you I was pretty negative about them prior. I drove a Jeep with CVT a bit, think it was a Patriot, and really didn't like that drivetrain at all.

I drove a TON of rentals and can always tell when it has a CVT. Ugh. Doesn't happen often since I've gotten to National Elite status and usually get bigger SUV's, but some markets they still have junk cars. LOL.

Man that’s gonna be awesome. I’ll keep an eye out for some good deals and ideas. I have a handful of ford buddies.

Sounds like a good starting point and a good plan. I’m following along for the progress

for an update. runs, and discovered that its a big block 460 :) in my efforts to clean house last weekend i found a sterling 10.25 sitting in the back of my shed. its rained all week so my mess with it this weekend. need to do a full frame inspection and make sure its not to far gone.

Very cool you have a 460! That should chomp through some gas. I'm surprised, not sure I realized they were still putting 460's into that body style. What year is it? And is it an F150 or 250?

97 F250. for the 500$ i paid for it, i fully expected it to be a small motor of some sort buy the drivetrain is a good deal, the truck itself is questionable.

Aha, guess they still were putting them in 3/4 tons at that point. Terrific engine.

Had some fun at Golden Mountain Park in Sparta TN. They are open again but not every weekend. One of our buddies got us in on a closed weekend. Great to be having fun at the top of Bounty Hill again. Bypassing the actual bounty part below of course, lol. Was a smoke show to make the last bump out. Don't have that sharable yet. Ram towed awesome. Had a fun big hill climb out of Chattanooga on 111. Best of the 3 trucks I've had over the years to pull it.
