Lifter Failure? Report it here!

That is exactly what mine does. I had it at the dealer last January? With approx 9,500 miles on it. The tick has gotten significantly worse and now ticks at idle 85% of the time as well. I have not been back to the dealer as they told me it was normal egr function (obviously not). I don’t want them tearing into the engine because at that point I don’t want the truck any longer. I have done a uoa on every oil change since I bought it new. First oil change at 3,037 miles and iron was 34ppm. Second oil change at 9,347 miles (6,310 miles between oil changes) and iron was 47 ppm. Third oil change was done at 15,905 miles (6,558 miles since last oil change). Iron now at 118ppm and copper 90ppm and potassium remains elevated at 73ppm. As stated above, driving home from the outer banks I could hear the engine tapping driving next to barriers. It sounds terrible and did not sound like this when new. I bought the truck new in June of 2024 and do not tow. I daily drive the truck, mostly highway, and now have 20k miles on it. I have about 4k miles on this oil change interval and plan to change it when I get to around 22k miles. I will send another sample to oil analyzers to determine wear metals. Yes I am aware that diesels may take some time to break in; however, I wouldn’t anticipate iron to spike on the 3rd oil change interval. Something is wrong with this engine imo. I need to take a video increasing rpm’s.

Btw, that’s not dirt you see it’s just heavily undercoated, I live in the rust belt.

My engine sounds a lot like your first provided video. My rattle now starts from about 1100 rpms up and yes it sounds horrible and worse when you go by a wall so it can echo off it. As I stated before I don't have confidents in driving this truck long miles to VA consult appointments around the state of AZ and it leaving me stranded the way this thing sounds. All I get from Star is it's under investigation and maybe someday we will have a fix for you, I know what the fix is it's called a new engine.

I hear ya, I’m likely looking to unload this truck (despite the fact that I love it otherwise) on something else.

I'm right there with ya, I have enough health issues I'm dealing with at the VA and now I got to deal with Stellantis/Star over this as well.

Good luck to you with your truck and health, and thank you for your service.

Thank you, I spent a quick second looking to trade it in on a ordered truck from Mark Dodge where I ordered this truck from if I went that route. Anthony at MD informed me the lifter issue/star case would have to be taken care of before they could take it in on trade on a new 2026 truck. It's just an all around crap show.

Isn't it funny you see @RamCares all over the forum wanting to help but they never seem to come and address any concerns in this thread, it's like this thread has the flu or something. It reminds me of all the issues with the CP4 they were never to be seen.
Please be advised that the RamCares account here is in place for assistance purposes only. You have already tagged them in this thread, which would be viewed as “reaching out for help” (see multi quote and post number for reference). Repeatedly tagging them, especially in a manner which may be viewed as badgering, is against the rules you agreed to follow when you joined. If you need assistance, you can reach out to them directly via PM. No further tagging of their account is necessary at this point, and doing so further would be viewed as having a negative motive.

I am sorry you’re having issues with your truck, and sincerely hope they get it addressed. But please do not use this forum as a tool to direct your frustrations towards others.

Since my repair that I received back Oct 8, 2025 my lifter/camshaft noise has been progressively getting worse. You can now hear the lifters going down the road in the cab with the windows up. The lifters sound like they are trying to swap holes on engine deceleration and the rattle is horrible at 1850 rpm's.

I stopped by my local dealer 10-24-2025 and had my SW listen to it and he tells me there is nothing more he can do for my truck as Stellantis/Star bulletin S2509000005 won't let them do any more repairs on my engine outside of it puts a window in the block with 61900 miles. I don't have confidents in driving this truck long miles to VA appointments around the state of AZ and it leaving me stranded but it's my only vehicle currently and I have a 250 mile round trip to Flagstaff to do 11-6 for my spine. Ram/Stellantis is leaving me in a situation as to want to leave the Ram product completely as I don't need a diesel truck. Hey @RamCares are you there for help on this as my truck needs a new engine installed or at least camshaft and lifters?

Rams new 10/100 warranty is a joke since they won't fix the issues that are currently happening under warranty to my truck outside of hoping I purchase a new truck.

I know members are going to say just do the flat tappet conversion but that's what a $6-8k bill min when Ram should be fixing the issue.

It would be nice if they would ever reach out to help assist with getting my truck repaired with Star other we cannot do anymore repairs at this time. The dealers hands are tied since Star still has my truck under investigation, when I will have an answer is anyone's guess and the dealer contacts Star and most days they never pick up the phone. It's very frustration not knowing if your investment is going to leave you stranded in the AZ heat or blow an engine and get you into an accident.

Trust me when I say we all understand that.

However this forum has no direct connection with the corporation and the RamCares account is strictly the liaison between individual customers here. Repeatedly tagging them , especially driven by frustration and dissatisfaction, doesn’t really further your cause. The best approach is a direct PM to them. If you have not already done so, please do that.

Keep in mind that the issue you’re experiencing may be the result of n issue currently under investigation by Cummins engineering. It may be quite a while before the general public is made aware of the cause of some of these ticking issues. Many many dealers were dismantling and replacing components, only to have the sound return. Unless you have physical evidence of components failing I wouldn’t be to sure it’s lifter failure

They are not fixing anything, I stopped by the dealer yesterday to show them a video of my truck on high idle with all lifters horribly rattling away louder than the engine at 1200 rpm and he just tells me his hands are tied from Star no more repairs to my truck outside if it explodes which it will be doing soon from the sound of it.

Also reached out to @Ramcare on Monday they responded with a generic question, I responded with 4 other communications to them and haven't heard a peep since Monday's original question.

>Require ****ty valve-train from cummins
>****ty valve-train is ****ty & unreliable
>refuse to honor warranty work on valve-train after 6 years of it being in service.
>Welcome to the Stellantis experience.

So they're more interested in finding out if someone maintained the truck properly or "tampered" with it than they are in fixing the known issue.

Lovely.
That would be correct, one of my service visits for the peco sound readings and the rocker arm/push rod replacement they were curious as to how often I changed my oil and what oil I was using and If I was doing it my self and what brand of filter and oil and weight.

I informed them I do it myself and the date and mileage is listed on the oil filter along with the air filter if they wanted to have a look and I have a Femco valve for convenance for draining.
