2019 Truck cap/topper/camper shell thread

Thank you so much @Gondul ! I realized after you posted that while I said mid rise I meant that as can height, not extra tall. I'm realizing I need to update that. Thank you for posting though!

My cap is cab height, here are some measurements I posted awhile back in here

Shortest vertical measurement at the hinge, center of width, with a rubber bed mat, is 38-3/8”

max interior height in center of bed, centered between wheel wells, with bed mat, is 41-3/4”

For any cap in general installed on one of these Rams, how does the installer wire them (for brake light, overhead light, or even power locks)? Do they have to cut into existing wiring or do they use some sort of connector?
dm6, go back to pages 1 thru 8 and you'll find your answers with some pics etc.

Thanks for that. I saw a couple mentions of the wires above the tire and the drivers footwell. When I was at a canopy dealer, they also mentioned something about it being easy to wire a Ram and they go from the drivers side. For those of you that have gotten that, what does that consist of? Are they tearing up a bunch of stuff and drilling, or what? I am just trying to envision how much they mess with and if they just run some wires all the way back from there and where they put them.

For the brake light, I connected to the wire above the spare and ran the new wire up to the driver's side rear of the bed. This made it easy for them once I pointed it out. They first connected the cap's interior led light to the wiring for the bed led lights. Interestingly that kept blowing a fuse, or so they told me. So, they ended up connecting the cap light differently. Odd that one more led light on that circuit was too much. Did not make sense to me but the way they did it works so have not worried about it.

The ARE instructions that they provide to their dealers is to tap into the brake light wiring underneath the driver door sill.

That is why I asked my dealer to install my cap and not touch the wiring. Wired it myself.

I prewired my truck and told the dealer I would finish setting it up, all they had to do was secure the shell to the truck. Tapped into the brake wire above the spare tire for the third brake light, tapped into the door lock wires under the driver's doorsill and ran into bed for the shell electric lock, and ran red and black 10 ga wires from the driver's side battery for lights and whatever accessories.

That is beautiful!! Do you mind me asking how much you paid for that?
About $3,600. DO NOT BUY THIS CAP until ARE updates their mold. There are a couple things that bug me about it. The trim piece on the bottom makes it look older. Also, the back side windows are too small for the newer body style Ram. The windows do not line up with the truck windows as I have seen other caps. ARE and the dealer failed to mention this cap is actually the same as the 2009 body style.

Different model but just for reference: In Feb 2021, I paid $2,900.00 for my ARE MX with sliding side windows, sliding fold down front window, dog screens, black carpet headliner, and R&L T-Handles. So far, I am very happy with it.

I mean…the bed and cab hasn’t changed since then…why would they change the mold? Sorry but that’s partially on you for not doing your research bro.
I confirmed with the dealer when I ordered it that it was trimless. However, the dealer is claiming ignorance and blaming ARE. And ARE is saying that, nope, that's how they make them. Also, the body style of the cab in the HDs changed in 2014, although the bed stayed the same.

Great, now I will notice that! Ha. Actually I was probably going to get something with sliders anyways because that might be better for a dog. I have not looked at ARE yet but so far like the Leer 100XR

Sounds like a **** dealer. Still, probably should have tried to find some pictures of one before ordering?

Except no. The suspension changed, interior was updated…but the Cab and bed has generally been the same on HDs since 2010 (2009 on 1500s)

Yes, dealer was not good. That is a whole other story. The pics I saw did show the trim on the older trucks, that's why I asked about it.

My post is mainly for people who have the newer trucks to be aware of the issues with the ARE Z series and how it relates to a 2021 RAM 2500.

Finally. After 16 weeks I get my Z series installed tomorrow! 2021 Ram 2500 6.4L Hemi. Crystal Granite color. I sprung for the Cap, Keyless entry and the front Drop down slider. It also comes with fully carpeted interior, Frameless back glass and screened side windows -ETC Hoping fit and finish are good!

Somehow they’ve gotten faster. Took 17 weeks to get mine. I have my fingers crossed for you on fit and finish and getting all the options you ordered.

There are only 2 ADDED options the rest are factory installed. You wouldn't think there would be much to overlook LOL. I "assume" the dealer would have picked up on it if anything was missing before calling me to install but in this day and age I dont know what to expect...

Don’t assume anything in 2021, sir
ARE built mine without a slider.
