Everything You Need to Know About the STLA Frame
A Versatile Architecture for Electric and Hybrid Trucks and SUVs...
The STLA Frame platform represents Stellantis‘ bold leap forward in the design and engineering of its full-size body-on-frame (BoF) trucks and SUVs. This highly adaptable, battery-electric vehicle (BEV)-native platform builds upon the foundation of the Ram 1500 (DT) architecture while introducing advanced capabilities tailored for internal combustion engine (ICE), battery-electric vehicle (BEV), range-extender electric vehicle (REEV), hybrid, and even hydrogen propulsion systems.
The STLA Frame is designed to accommodate the diverse needs of the North America and certain global markets. This architecture already underpins the current Ram 1500, Jeep® Wagoneer, and Jeep Grand Wagoneer, and is set to underpin the all-electric Ram 1500 REV, range-extending Ram 1500 Ramcharger, Jeep Wagoneer 4xe, and Jeep Grand Wagoneer 4xe.
Performance Beyond Expectations –
-
Best-in-Class Range –
- Battery-Electric Vehicles (BEVs): With cutting-edge battery technology, BEVs on the STLA Frame platform deliver up to 500 miles (800 km) of range.
- Range-Extended Electric Vehicles (REEVs): These vehicles push range limits to an impressive 690 miles (1,100 km) by utilizing a generator to recharge the battery while maintaining full electric drive.
-
Exceptional Capability –
- Towing Capacity: Built to handle loads of up to 14,000 pounds (6,350 kg), meeting or exceeding traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) rivals.
- Payload Rating: A payload capacity of 2,700 pounds (1,224 kg) ensures practicality for both personal and commercial use.
- Off-Road Resilience: With 24 inches (610 mm) of water fording capability and adaptable ground clearance between 6.6 and 10.3 inches (168 to 262 mm), the platform is designed for tough terrain.
-
Power and Performance –
- Electric Drive Modules (EDMs): Stellantis-designed front and rear EDMs deliver up to 250 kW each, enabling powerful all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations. These EDMs provide acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds while offering precise torque management.
Innovative Propulsion Systems –
While the STLA Frame already sits underneath internal combustion engine (ICE) options, it does support a variety of propulsion options to suit different consumer needs:
-
Battery-Electric (BEV) –
- These vehicles are powered entirely by electricity, featuring advanced liquid-cooled battery packs ranging from 159 kWh to over 220 kWh. This capacity ensures not only exceptional range but also the power needed for heavy-duty tasks.
-
Range-Extended Electric (REEV) –
- REEVs combine the benefits of electric drive with a small ICE engine that powers a generator. This setup:
- Allows extended operation without compromising towing or hauling capacity.
- Eliminates mechanical connections between the engine and wheels, focusing entirely on electric propulsion for enhanced efficiency and torque.
-
Future Compatibility –
- Stellantis has also said that the STLA Frame BoF architecture has also been engineered for hydrogen fuel cell, hybrid, and updated ICE technology propulsion system. This will help to ensure long-term flexibility as propulsion systems evolve.
Charging Innovations –
The STLA Frame platform supports industry-leading charging capabilities:
- BEV Fast Charging: An 800-volt system delivers up to 350 kW, adding 100 miles (161 km) in just 10 minutes.
- REEV Fast Charging: A 400-volt system supports up to 175 kW, recharging 50 miles (80 km) in the same time.
- Bi-Directional Charging: Vehicles can share power with other EVs, supply energy to a home during outages, or even return electricity to the grid.
Engineering Excellence –
The STLA Frame’s structure utilizes advanced high-strength steel, providing:
- Improved Rigidity: Ensures the vehicle can handle high loads and challenging conditions.
- Weight Optimization: Enhances efficiency without sacrificing durability.
- Aerodynamics and Efficiency: A full-length belly pan reduces aerodynamic drag, extending driving range while improving vehicle stability.
- Battery Safety and Integration: The platform features a widened center section to house the battery, with reinforced frame rails offering protection during side impacts.
Dimensions and Customization –
Platform Specifications –
- Length: 216-234 inches (5,488-5,941 mm)
- Width: 81.2-83.6 inches (2,062-2,124 mm)
- Wheelbase: 123.7-145.3 inches (3,143-3,690 mm)
- Ground Clearance: 6.6-10.3 inches (168-262 mm)
- Maximum Tire Diameter: 33 inches (838 mm)
These dimensions make the platform versatile enough for a wide range of vehicle designs, from rugged pickups to luxurious full-size SUVs.
Suspension Technology –
The architecture supports multiple suspension options, including air suspension systems, which provide superior ride comfort and adaptability based on load conditions or driving terrain.
Future-Proofing Through Modular Design –
The STLA Frame is built to stay ahead of the curve, offering:
- Interchangeable Components: Battery chemistries, EDMs, and software can be upgraded or replaced to match future advancements.
- Scalable Energy Storage: It’s engineered to adopt next-generation battery technologies as they become available.
Why the STLA Frame Matters –
