We Take A Look At The 2020 Ram Heavy Duty Chassis Cab Lineup:
Handful Of New Options Going Into New Model Year...
Fresh off of a complete overhaul of the fourth-generation Ram Heavy Duty for the 2019 model year, the 2020 Ram Chassis Cab 3500, 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cab trucks come into the new model year with a handful of new features that customers have been asking for. So let’s take a look at what Ram Commercial has in store for their Chassis Cab lineup going into 2020.
Ram starts off with offering the same model lineup for 2020 as it did for the launch of the revised trucks last year. The job-rated Tradesman model offers customers a tough and capable platform to get any task done. The mid-level SLT model offers a more driver and passenger creature comforts than the Tradesman but continues to be a solid value in the marketplace. The entry-level luxury Laramie model offers premium touches not seen on most trucks in the segment. While the ultra-luxury Limited halo-model returns with features real wood trim, premium leather seats, and standard 12-inch Uconnect touchscreen infotainment system.
Ram Chassis Cab models come in four industry-standard frame lengths, this is measured in inches from the cab to the rear axle (CA). The four different lengths are CA 60, CA 84, CA 108, and CA 120. The 2020 Ram Heavy Duty Chassis Cab has a frame built from 97-percent high-strength steel and eight separate cross members. With upfitters kept in mind, the Ram engineering team uses a C-channel design in the rear frame sections with a flat mounting surface. This gives zero component interference about the frame rails and helps to make upfitting an easy and cost-effective task.
Last year, the Ram engineering team upgraded the four-wheel disc braking systems on the Chassis Cab lineup with a larger ratio pedal swing. This upgrade allows for more confident and power activation with little effort from the driver. This also the system shorter stopping distances.
The updated fourth-generation Ram Heavy Duty body uses light-weight materials such as an aluminum hood which helped the Chassis Cab models cut 120 pounds from the previous models. The 2020 Ram 3500/4500/5500 Chassis Cab trucks can come in Regular Cab (Tradesman and SLT) or Crew Cab (Tradesman, SLT, Laramie, and Limited) configurations. Choice of two-wheel-drive (4×2) or four-wheel-drive (4×4) on all models are available.
The standard engine for the Ram 3500/4500/5500 Chassis Cab is the potent 6.4-liter HEMI V8 BGE (or Big Gas Engine). In the Ram 3500 Chassis Cab produces 410 horsepower and 429 lb.-ft. of torque and features exclusive Fuel Saver Technology cylinder deactivation to increase fuel economy and is paired with the smooth-shifting TorqueFlite 8HP75 8-speed automatic is the standard transmission. An optional Aisin AS66RC six-speed automatic transmission with Power Take-Off (PTO), Fuel Saver Technology functions under light load while in stationary PTO mode to reduce fuel consumption.
In Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cab models, the 6.4-liter HEMI comes standard with the Aisin AS66RC electronically controlled 6-speed automatic transmission with optional Power Take-Off (PTO) capability, delivers 370 horsepower and 429 lb.-ft. of torque.
In all applications, the 6.4-liter HEMI uses interactive Deceleration Fuel Shut-Off, which stops fuel flow to the cylinders when decelerating, to improve fuel economy.
The revised 6.7-liter Cummins inline-six turbo diesel is optional on Ram 3500/4500/5500 Chassis Cab. The engine is paired with the Aisin AS69RC electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission with optional PTO capability, the Cummins engine delivers 360 horsepower and the highest available torque in the Class 4 and 5 segments, with 800 lb.-ft of torque.
The electronically controlled Aisin AS66RC six-speed automatic is the standard transmission for Ram 4500/5500 Chassis Cabs equipped with the 6.4-liter HEMI V-8, and optional on the Ram 3500 Chassis Cab with the 6.4-liter HEMI V-8. This transmission offers the option of PTO capability on the left or right side.
Ram 3500/4500/5500 Chassis Cab trucks equipped with the Cummins Turbo Diesel use an Aisin AS69RC six-speed automatic transmission also featuring PTO capability on the left or right side in 4×2 configurations.
