Windshield tint w ceramic film

Not knowing if you’ve had tint before just want to point out that it’s kind of a cumulative thing. By that I mean 70% on a windshield with say 50% on the rest of the windows is going to look a lot different than 70% on the windshield with 5% everywhere else.

There’s tons of places in dfw that will install air80 or equivalent but not many that will go darker on the windshield.

As you’ve already pointed out, any tint - whether it’s 80% vlt or 5% - below the as1 line is illegal. But the tint shops seem to ignore that for 70 or 80% and call it “clear” whatever the f that means.

I run 50% on the windshield with 5% on front/back glass and 15% on rear (so total vlt comparing front to rear matches better and looks more uniform). My wife has air80 on her windshield. Not much of a difference at night between the two in my opinion but a big difference during bright daylight sun rising/setting in your face hours.

I ran the same tint in my previous truck for 4 years and never had anyone that rode comment on the windshield being dark. Could be because my front glass was dark and that took their attention? But I think you’d be surprised how 70%, or even 50%, isn’t noticeable.

I have it on both my truck and wife's car, all windows, sunroof and even full windshield (i think at 80%) for the windshield. Like above poster not noticeable for day or night driving and greatly reduces heat passing thru.

Great topic.

I had considered tinting the windshield but was concerned about rainbows or patterns that the other film tinted windows create with polarized glasses. But a quick Google search and I learned windshields don’t have those issues as they are laminated safety glass versus tempered. I thought it was due solely to the tint but the tint film just enhances it.

^ one thing i noticed with the tint, there are some spots that have a green tint when looking through polarized lenses. Not a lot, but seemed like some of the dark spots in the road mainly.

Wonder if the tint causes that or just the polarized lenses in general since as you rotate your head the polarization changes the appearance of things on the road like reflections and such, also happens with phone screens, gauge screens, anything with a polarizing filter. My Banks iDash gauges go black if I rotate my sunglasses 45 deg relative to them. They come back viewable at 90 deg.

I did the ceramic on my 2019 2500 Limited. I went with the limo tint and honestly it isn't nearly as dark as i expected it to be. You can still see through the back window and rear windows fine. My truck is black so i thought this would help with the heat, but honestly the ram seems hotter than my old Raptor used to be with non-ceramic tint.

I had a Llumar ceramic film installed on mine to stop the heat and UV. Also been using Ray-Ban polarized lenses in several colors for nearly twenty years.

I run 50% ceramic tint on my windshield and no issues. It made a noticeable difference with interior heat.

Llumar also has Air 90 - it is virtually clear, but still blocks 99% of UV light.

I asked my local authorized Llumar installer about the legal issues, as well as cost:-

“To tint your truck with a dyed film on all sides and back the cost would be $279.99 installed

The 90 for the windshield is $199 installed.

As far as legality - the law states the only part of the windshield that can be tinted is above the as1 line so by wording the 90 wouldn't be legal - however being a virtually clear film we've never encountered any issues.”

That’s really cheap for a windshield.

Good to know. This is the first time I’ve ever got a quote. I never added it to my 1500, but definitely gonna do it on the 2500.

In Pa we have the law that keeps you at and above the AS-L line in the glass for what we call a visor. I have 5% there, but my guy went down 2" lower than the AS-L line per my directive. I've been doing this for years and cheating a bit and the annual inspection stations as well as the police have never given me any flack. My front doors are matched to the factory back doors, I believe he used 30% on them. I wanted the side glass to be very similar and uniform, I feel that he did pretty good. I am really happy with how it looks, and the visor helps greatly driving into the sun.Ram tint.jpg

Missouri only allows up to 35 on the front windows. But as others have said, LEOs usually have more to worry about than window tinting….

FWIW cheapest windshield quote for 3M film in my area was $299

In case anyone wants to see what the PHX market is, here’s the guy I used. You can get pricing instantly on his site:

Note: he had prime + when I got my truck done. It was $900 for prime + all around, sunroof, and windshield.

If you want a second take on the "legality"....y'all talk about the cop here, but get in an accident and let the other ins. co find tint covering your windshield and see what happens to the "who's at fault" answer.
You are spot on. I could care less about a ticket from a cop, but dealing with a team of lawyers from a multi billion dollar insurance company is another story.

For those that have tinted the windshields and have registration and or inspections stickers on there how do you deal with them?
