Steering wheel controls stop working

I keep my eyes open for squarebody's ... not sure I'll ever jump on it, but would enjoy having one. I had a series of '90's vintage diesels, have thought about finding an early 6.2.

Sorry you are added to the growing list! I really don't think there's going to be an "aha!" moment where someone finds the problem and no more hunting connections or replacing parts. I do hope it happens, just doesn't seem to be headed that way.
Update after a visit to the dealer:
Jumpstarted the truck with the jump pack and and jumper cables. The dead batteries reset the truck - so all was operating normally. The dealer looked it all over and documented our complaints while being unable to re create the issues. They did do software updates, which according to them, have just been released. With fingers crossed we go back to pick it up tonight. They did say, the moment any of the issues surface again to call them and get the truck back to the garage.

I'll update again, when (if) the issues return.

RAM 2024 2500 Laramie, Cummins, 1,500 miles, purchased FEB2025. Looked here to troubleshoot the issue with left steering wheel buttons issue as I started experiencing the same issue today. Noticed my grounds were a bit loose on both batteries. Went ahead and fully disconnected then for a bit while I grabbed a wrench and after I reconnected and tightened them securely, all is working fine. Hopefully it’s fixed, we’ll see.

2019 1500 Big Horn 5.7 Crew

Problem: Left hand steering wheel controls front and back don't work. Heated steering wheel light will turn on, but turn off in about 5 seconds. (Curise side is working).

Tried solutions:
1. Called dealership. Asked for price on new clockspring. Wanted about $90 for part and 1 hour labor. TOLD ME THEY PART IS ON BACKORDER FOR 3 MONTHS AND THREE PEOPLE WHERE IN FRONT OF ME. Sounds like they are stalling and this is a bigger problem.
2. Ordered clockspring online. Replaced with battery disconnected. Problem still exists.
3. Looked at fuses. 41 a & b looked ok. I will replace it. (Online found F82 but can't find it and think it is from 2018 and earlier).

Going to try:
1. Test back sterring wheel switch electrically for continuity.
2. Remove airbag, steering wheel, and clock spring again and try to find if I am getting power to original wire, which I don't know what it is.

Personally think it is a modual, hardware/software issue, or power supply but don't know where to check.

Side Note: Dealership wanted $4,000 and keep for 2 weeks to replace bad gauges that were blurring out. Went to 2 different dealerships. I bought a similar milage display online for $140. Gave me extra gear mode after PRND1 and an Eco green light. Took less than 30 minutes (6 phillips head and youtube), they were charging 5.5 hrs. of labor. I would rather repair myself...don't HATE dealerships, but would rather not.

2023 3500 bighorn

Had this issue happen today. Everything worked fine this morning and then halfway through the day buttons on the back of the wheel stopped working along with the arrow buttons on the left.

I removed and replaced fuse 82 and now everything works as it should

The fuse was good. I simply removed it and replaced it while the truck was turned off.

Well...I'm sad to say that I'm now part of this group also.

I have RAM 2022 2500 Laramie diesel, and my steering wheel controls on the front left side, and the buttons on the back stopped working two days ago. And get this...I have 35,800 miles on it, and the warranty expires in less than 200 miles!

It looks like most of the issues in this thread are for 2023 trucks and newer.

I already removed/replace fuse #82, with no change in symptoms. The dealer is 2 weeks out on appointments, and in two days I'm supposed to head out of state for a week, using this truck to tow a trailer full of SXS's to WV and back. Just great.

Is there any safety issues with driving the truck as it is right now?

UPDATE: I also unhooked both batteries for about 15 minutes, and reconnected them, with no improvement of the symptoms. The front left side, and back buttons, on the steering wheel still do not function.

Both my fuse boxes (under hood and steering wheel) both are under 70 so I don't think I have a fuse #82 to check. Sure it is my model ('19 Big Horn 5.7 no eco), but I feel really stupid looking for hours for a fuse. Bought and replaced a 15 amp 3 pronged fuse with no change. Even found on the previous model they put the fuse inline outside the fuse box for the radio. (Please let me know if I am really that dumb to not find a fuse in a fusebox).

Might test the back switch (it seems easy to remove and test) eventhough it seems really odd they would both the front and back would be bad on the same side.

I would do some continuty tests deeper in the wires, but I don't want an airbag to blow because I tripped a sensor and not sure what connections to even test.

I can deal with swithching the radio myself, but seeing the oil temp instead of my speed and not being able to reset my oil change is really annoying.

Sorry if I am in the wrong forum but I am just a Newbie trying to find some answers (Please let me know).

My fuse (82) was for cruise control so I don’t know if that would be something you want to check on your truck even though the fuse panel is different It’s probably a different number. The cruise control still worked when my other steering wheel buttons didn’t work, but I’m assuming that is the fuse that all the signal goes through for the steering wheel I have no idea, but it worked for me.

Hello, Add me to this list. 2024 Laramie 2500 with 4,400 miles on it. Bought it in January. Started this morning. No left side EVIC buttons, back side buttons for radio do not work. Heated steering wheel, cruise, and gear shift buttons work. Don't know about if the wheel gets hotter than normal yet. Will try pulling the fuse first and see what that does. I wonder if there could be a short loss of communication through the clock spring, wiring, or ground that then requires the module to be reset?

I am still dealing with this issue. I have been getting by popping the batt cables off for 5 min here and there. Prob done it about 1/2 dozen times now. Dealer is useless. Ram is useless. Pretty much getting ghosted on return calls from dealer.

Came accross this in another forum that I don't recall seeing for a potential solution on this thread:

@relbus reading your story and the others here looks discouraging. Just came back to Ram after a problematic Ford. Glad I have a warranty, but pretty annoying right off the bat on the first brand new vehicle I've ever bought....

If it makes you feel better, I am on my 6th Ram Cummins. I have had great luck with the trucks overall. Until this point any pain and suffering was self inflicted since I voided warranties and chased horsepower.

For those of you still under warranty, and less than a year old - I would kick and scream and stomp my feet and get attorneys involved long before the 1 year of ownership mark. I would reference this thread and the various FB groups that discuss this issue. I would demand to know the following - if you cant fix it by a given date, then what? After the 1 year mark in my state I cannot lemon law the truck. Now after I am outside the 3/36 warranty , its like good will.
Super frustrating!!

I ran out on lunch and tried a soft reset on the radio. That didn't help. I then pulled fuse F82 (SCCM / Cruise Control), put it back in, and the buttons all work again. Seems to me that this must be a module issue and resetting it resolves it. Just a hypothesis, but based on what I've read so far, that's what I am coming up with. Next time it happens I'll have to get it into the dealer...

I will try this before I leave the office today and see if it works for me. my buttons are not working at the moment and I haven't had a chance to pull the batt cables.

Sounds good. With the chronic issue you have had, I wonder if it would be worth trying to replace the SCCM module. Looks like one for my truck is only like $70 (on a quick search). Hopefully the fuse pull works for you short term.

Removing F82 and replacing did not work for me. I only removed it for a minute or so. After that I did the batt cable trick and my buttons are working again.
I believe they already replaced a module...i think it was that module. I need to reference the paperwork to be sure though.

That's interesting that it didn't work for you. I didn't even pull it out for a minute, just a few seconds. Now, I went out the truck this morning and the batter was dead. Had to jump it. Drove it to work and it started back up this afternoon. Not sure what is going on with it.... Anyone else have their battery go dead as well? I thought I read that someone else had, but don't recall if it was in this thread or a different one...

Didn't think I was having any other issues the past couple of days (although the steering wheel buttons seem sluggish / don't always respond right away). However, last night I drove in the dark and realized my steering wheel lights blink steady like a hazard light (very distracting at night). Made an appointment with the dealer for Monday. Frustrating...

I took mine in to have them look at the issue. They said make an appt., which I did...12 days out. I went to drop it off and the said it'll be at least 3-4 days "before" they can even look at it. Really??? I have to make an appt. for my truck to sit in their lot for 3-4 days before they can even look at it. I'm not getting a good feeling about this...stay tuned.

Just an update - issue continued to occur to me. I was able to take mine into the dealership and they changed out the clock spring. Since then the issue has not returned. Now, it has been warm here and I haven’t used the steering wheel heater, not sure if that matters or not. But is has been all good for two month now.

I picked it up a week and a half later and all "seems" to be well. They said there was a small 2 amp fuse inside of something inside the steering column that had blown. They replaced the fuse and everything works as it should...for now.
