Hey guys
Having the time, materials and tools to make some myself, I'll try to document what takes shape...For better or worse..... The headache rack, electric sign actuators and radio console came out OK for a hack like myself, so why not?
I want some kind of step to get into the 2500 diesel crew cab (wife is "5'4 1/2" and I'm getting old), and get some kind of side bed access.
So I'm going to try to document what takes place.
Normally I build my offroad rigs' sliders from the frame. But looking online, everyone just goes to the holes that the factory put in for their steps. So I went that route this time
First step was to get some rivnuts installed. I have a big selection of "normal" rivnuts, so just hit the hex headed holes with a small increment step bit to make the 3/8-16 rivnuts fit nice. Issue is...My gun wont fit. I tried the bolt, nut and washer method, but the rivnut would spin in the hole. So I grabbed some bent 1/8" scrap I had, drilled a 3/8" hole, cut a small piece of rubber, and it works a treat. Dont even need a wrench on the bolt while turning the nut, the plate holds it perfectly. Also easier to get the nut in dead straight vs holding a backing wrench or socket

Yeah, I could have bent another piece at a 90, but it worked. Could have also just held the steel, but the body held it better, thus the rubber to stop it scratching.
More to come

My last adventure, for those that didn't see it

Been plodding away
Made the main brackets out of 3/8" plate, going to 1/4" which goes to the rivnuts
Longest sliders I've ever made lol
Got the 4 steps for the doors bent up. I'll notch them and tack them up, then make a paid for bed access. Then fully weld and paint

Looks great! Good fab work. Can you take a picture from the side? I'd be interested to see how far they go into the bed.

The tube is 11 gauge 1.75" and 1.5" for the steps. Look better with 2" tube being so long, but I don't have a die for the bender in that size.
I dimple died the sheet metal on top of the steps for grip when wet etc
I think they'd look better with some tabs welded on, and aluminum bolted on top of the step now though. Hindsight......lol
All told, I have $100 in the tubing, then used crap I had laying around for the rest of the steel. Bolts came from the junk drawer, I had a load of 3/8" grade 8 bolts left from another project. I had the rivnut tool and nuts already. Add in @$25 for primer and spray on bedliner
