Regens at alarming rate!

With all the discussion of how much better the new and improved dpf filter and system is, any chance that if not all of it some of it will be backwards compatible to retrofit the previous years.

Completely different strategy of filter operation.

I got this message yesterday and after that truck is even not trying to do a regen. The DPF filter is at 100%. The filter that I ordered should arrive next week.

Is there anything I can do to get regen started?
First off, do you have any other codes?

Option one (the best) is take it to the dealer. You have a 2023 correct? Is your warranty still good? If so, Ram needs to deal with this. Unless you have a heavy trailer to tow, I had the "100% full" issue two years ago going up a steep pass, but on the other side, the EGT towing heat cooked off the soot enough that the regen restarted, and cleared on its own. I got lucky, so if you have such a load, hook up, fill up, and take a long drive and you may get lucky, but you may be pushing it. That instance took over 60 miles to clear out.

Option two is to initiate a stationary "desoot" or parked regen.

You will need an Android phone, and an OBD2 reader that does two way communication. I use the OBDlink MX+. It costs about $140, there are cheaper options, do your own research. I like the software that comes with this reader, many options. https://www.amazon.com/OBDLink-Bluetooth-Professional-Grade-Diagnostic-Performance/dp/B07JFRFJG6

You will also need a bypass cable. There are two types, one requires removing your dash cluster to access the bypass blocker. It is not so difficult, but there is a better cable that connects the two busses right behind the headlight switch. Fast and easy. See the video for instructions. Get that here for $50, fast shipping. https://www.obdgenie.com/products/2018-fca-security-gateway-module-bypass-device

And you will need AlfaOBD for Android. I think it is $50 on Google Play for Android apps. https://www.alfaobd.com/download.html

As for using the software, that will take a bit of a write up. Info is hard to find, but it is out there. Send me a IM and I'll try to help. I got the stationary regen to start with the above stuff, it took many tries but I got it to go. The most important thing is resetting the DPF (like if it is a new DPF) computer values, that will remove the DTC of 100% full. ALL DTC,s need to be cleared before the regen will start.

And for now, do not drive your truck, you will end up with a face plugged DPF.

Well yesterday I was able to keep the EGTs in the 8-900* range with lots of boost, on and off, with a pretty steady crosswind. I would say if it was going to passive regen, it did it. Been running 1 oz/ 10 gal. Archoil but I think I could by without it. 16 hours since the last regen day before yesterday. Next regen will be on the leg of the trip from Albuquerque to Salt Lake.

I don’t use the archoil while I’m towing, I dose up after I unhook.

He has a flood truck he's rebuilding, no warranty.

JScan or AlfaOBD will do stationary forced Regen, so Android isn't a requirement. https://hdrams.com/forum/index.php?...forced-regen-for-2023-ram-2500-cummins.16597/

No reason to spend so much on a MX+ when a vLinker MC+ will do for half the price. https://tinyurl.com/ykzfj4ax

Make sure that C-INTBYP is the bypass selected (cable) if ordering from this link. https://www.obdgenie.com/products/2...y-module-bypass-device?variant=48932036247865

If you have settings for resetting DPF to new to clear a 100% full set code, please do post them.

I don't have warranty on this truck. I have Bypass cable and AlfaOBD. I tried to do forced regen on AlfaOBD, but it complained that conditions for that weren't met. I would appreciate any help.

Ok, give me the day, I need to remember what I did, it was a year ago. As long as the computer is calling for a regen, we can get it going.

For starters, No DTC,s can be present. Feet off the brakes but to start, parking brake must be set, don't do this in tall dry grass, fire hazard.

I'll get back to you on this.

Lucky you, I wrote up the procedure while it was fresh in my mind, more for me, in case I ever needed to do the stationary regen again.

I'll attach it here as a pdf, good luck. It worked for me, but it is kind of finicky.

I can only comment on what I used. I used a phone, it works fine. I have a drawer full of Android phones.....

When I ordered the bypass, they sent me both items, the "bridge" little square plastic thing that goes behind the cluster (a pita) and the cable behind the headlight switch. The latter is a no brainer.

See my PDF for the rest, thanks.

Thank you, your procedure was vrey helpful.

Filter arrived and I just installed it.
Let’s see if it changes anything.

Let’s see if it changes anything.

For my truck it did one more regen after the new filter and since then it's been performing much better.

I've been having to make a bunch of short drives and so far, the DPF hasn't filled up requiring a regen.

Update.
Yesterday, after I put the new filter I did the procedure for MAF sensor calibration below. It was not perfect, but I did it 4 times with 10+ min engine off. I noticed that "normalized trigger for DPF regen" started to climb and reached 98% during the process. Then it stopped there and dropped down to 93.7% while I was driving in town running errands.
I will continue monitoring, but I still can't see any obvious reasons what makes it go up and down.

So did you do a stationary regen/desoot with alfaobd?

I did this procedure right after a regen. I was at about 41%. I did this procedure to the letter and had good results. By the second run, my soot was up to 42% and stopped. The third run stayed at 42%. I have 550 miles so far on my interval. Point is, half assed effort is half assed results. Find a better stretch of hwy at a quiet time of day, ie, head north to wasilla, that is non stop, and pick a sunday when it's not busy. PS I live there for many years.

You may have a bad dpf, idk. The bore scope needed to look inside the canisters are not cheap, they need to be small, like 7mm. IF your DPF is face plugged, nothing is going to fix it.

can I do this procedure while towing? I am planning a trip to Valdez this weekend. I will definitely have some distance to do it on the way there if it is possible while towing.

Yes, I did. I let it run in front of my driveway and went inside. When I came back AlfaOBD stated that it has already finished it, however the dashboard was still showing 40%. When I started to drive it started to drop the percentage after normal regen was initiated. It was a very hectic week and I probably have to redo both MAF calibration and stationary regen if MAF calibration won't help.

My truck has been doing great since this time last year but being in the Salt Lake area with all of the traffic congestion it’s not doing so good. Even after having 2 regens while towing. It definitely does not like pull up and stop. I have accumulated 3 hours of idle time in 3 days sitting in traffic jams. I guess it’ll get cleaned out on the way back. I have still made it to 16 hours so far without a regen and the few times I have been able to run for 30-40 miles without having to stop, the reading on the SG drops down but as soon as I get back in the traffic it goes back up even running the performance dose of Archoil.

40% is normal, that is what my truck stops on for the finished regen with the OBDlink.
