I contacted RamChat today to get the status and towing capabilities for my ordered truck. I know that the truck has been built and is somewhere in transit.

When I asked about the status I got a reply that said “I will look that up. While you wait please give me your full address, zip code, phone number and email”. Instead of giving them my detailed personal information, I asked if they could give me the payload and towing capability for the truck. It is a 2500 so payload matters. She said it was 2450 pounds which I know is high for a highly optioned Laramie diesel. So I asked if that information was from the door sticker or a chart. She referred me to the general ram website capabilities chart which is over inflated marketing information from Ram corporate, and is not specific to my truck or the options I ordered. Based on my research for my truck her response of 2450 pounds my be as much as 500 pounds off. So her information was completely misleading, and unless I was smart enough to ask where she got the information, I would have believed that information was accurate. For a Ram 2500, 500 pounds of payload would make a huge difference. So don’t trust information you get from them regarding payload or towing capabilities.

Then she asked for my detailed personal information again, and after some back and forth it was clear she was not going to give me a status update on the truck unless I gave it to her. Rather than being up front with me and telling me that they only provide that information once you give them detailed personal information, they sneakily disguise how they try to get it by saying they will get you the information but while you wait please give me your full address including zip code, phone number, and email address. Needless to say I didn’t get a status update from RamChat.

RamChat is just a phishing site.

I could be wrong but I thought they asked these questions to verify its you, not sure I would call it a phishing site. The customer service reps only have access to a small amount of information. They are not intentionally lying to anyone, they are basically reading scripts and providing what their system shows...... may not be accurate but its what's in from of them.

I did give the vin along with my name and phone number and that is the information I got from RamChat. My point is they could have been upfront about getting my address instead of disguising it. They could have just said we’ll provide you that information once you provide us with your detailed personal information. Instead it was disguised in their statements about sure we’re working on looking that up… while you wait would give us this information. They never intended to give me a status update unless I gave that information to them. That approach is not up front, and hides their intentions to get your information. That approach was used 3 times on me in the chat before it was obvious it was a prerequisite to getting a status update. Just be upfront. In today’s world where everyone is trying to spam and phish your information I’d expect better from Ram corporate.

They could have also referred me to the towing website rather than giving me inaccurate generalized information and not telling me their source was not accurate. They had my VIN, wouldn’t you expect they could provide the specific payload and towing capability of the truck? … especially, as you say, it is available elsewhere in the web? I guess not.

I thought they could look it up too. Just don’t expect them to be upfront or accurate… right?

@spinned You do know that your VIN has been readily available to you and you can very simply go to the RAM TOWING GUIDE website and punch in your specific VIn and your specific max towing and absolute payload since your truck is built and has been weighed? It is a very simple task for any RAM owner.
I was curious and I may have the wrong vin here (or doing it wrong) but I tried with what I assumed was his, 3C6UR5FL9NG242284 and it gives the data last five years blah blah error.

Got a sticker and el though.

And an address
And phone
And criminal history
....

Mine also tells me that it only gives towing information for the last 5 model years. I thought that was odd. If you put a random VIN in that somewhat matches a real VIN, it says no results. I have a feeling that the VIN is populated in the SQL database, but since the information is blank during the build, it just returns that it is older than 5 years. Who knows lol.

When I ordered mine two years ago I saw the same information until my truck went into D status. Then it showed accordingly. I assumed it might have had something to do with once they print the sticker for the door jamb then some system was populated.

Well, I just checked again, now I get "No VIN Data available"

Not sure what site or browser you're using, but your VIN lookup works. Make sure you don't have a space at the end if you're doing copy/paste.

Also for what its worth I asked the Ramchat guy about the address usage and he replied:

Great question, we confirm the order details, otherwise anyone could chat or call in and get your order information, we extend that security to all customers. Also, if you were a Canadian or international customer we would need to get you connected to the right area

It's kind of funny I'm in Canada and check on my order every two weeks. Only once so far have they caught onto the fact I'm in Canada :) I just make sure to leave out my province when they ask for my address :)

This guy is going to have a cargo cam that has the blue screen of death and lose his chit.
