Oil Thread - 6.4 Hemi

Been running Quaker State Ultimate Durability Gen 2 5W/30 with great results in many vehicles. No tick. Ow/40 Mobil 1 tests almost as good.

That's a whole lotta words... I fell asleep scrolling..
Are there any links to any actual, documented tests (evidence) to support all his claims?

Believe whoever's BS you want about oil I guess. I think it's all BS and good way to get us to spend more money.

Hello, I’m a licensed LD & HD tech and worked for Chrysler Canada for 17 years. I recently bought a 2017 power wagon with 126,000kms on it. It had regular maintenance at the dealer as shown in the car fax report. These are my thoughts and findings. I run fleet guard (aka Cummins) oil filters as that’s all I will use on our fleet of HD and LD highway trucks and tractors and pickups at the shop. Great product, extended and severe duty. I switched to redline motor oil after the first oil change and have noticed no more hemi tick. I run Lucas additive every other oil change for extra protection. I continue to do this after owning a 2012 ram 1500 with a 5.7 hemi. I ran this truck from 60,000kms (bought used aswell) until the lifters finally started to take out the cam at 300,000kms. I used royal purple in the 5.7 the entire life of truck but getting oil sample results back in a comparison of royal purple to redline, the red line has far superior anti wear properties even after 5000kms. Yes I still change the oil every 5000kms sometimes I let it go 200-300kms over. Also it’s known that redline doesn’t change molecularly under heat the way other oils do and that’s why it’s preferred in racing. These are my beliefs and to each there own, guess I’ll see if this engine lasts as long as my 2012 did lol, Hopefully longer.

I've been running Castrol for years in my vehicles. Current '04Chevy truck has 135K miles on it and no issues so far.
I change my oil every 5K miles.
I plan on continuing with Castrol when I get my new PW with the 6.4.

I'm running AMSOIL Signature Series 0W-40 and an AMSOIL filter. Ran OE in my 1500, did an oil sample at 7100 miles when the monitor was at 2%. There was plenty of life left in the oil to run longer.
I plan on doing oil samples and seeing how long I can run the oil, at a minimum it will go 15k.

I’m using Redline 5w40 in my 6.4
Did the redline 5w40 stop the tick? I am using redline 0w40 and it got better for about 4000 miles but did not completely eliminate it.

Honestly, I don't think I have the tick, as I have never heard it. I switched over to Redline at 1200 miles.

Do we really use the same filter as the Compass?!

It's possible...the older filter for the 5.7's will fit and is much larger. Honestly with newer engines being much cleaner and having tighter tolerances than older engines, there is less "regular" debris that makes it into the oil that needs to be filtered out.
For a standard oil change interval I don't see an issue with running the small filter, but if you're going for a higher efficiency filter or extending your oil change interval you're going to need a larger filter.

So after much reading tonight on the good old internet, it appears there are only about 4 oils that advertise as meeting FCA's MS-12633 oil spec, only a couple of which are your easier to find brands. Mobil 1 is not one of which advetises meeting the FCA spec. It appears I will probably be running Valvoline or I may just bite the bullet and stick with the PUP.
I believe the Mobil one European blend meets that spec

not according to Mobil1 this is directly from their website today...

Based on what you've told us, your vehicle manufacturer recommends a 0W-40 viscosity and oil that meets Chrysler MS-12633. We currently do not offer any motor oils in the United States that meet these specifications.

FCA/MOPAR/STELLANIS put out a new Spec MS-A0921. which supersedes MS-12633 and AFAIK, only Pennzoil currently meets that requirement.

"Chrysler MS-12633 standards are aligned with meeting the old API SN & ILSAC GF-5 specifications.
The current Chrysler MS-A0921 standards meet the latest API SP & ILSAC GF-6 specifications, which is now found on our updated labels as our products meet the current GF-6 specifications."

I'm using castrol Edge 5W40 in mine. They do not carry a 0W 40 in my area. It rarely gets below 30 here.

Redline 0w40 in my truck. Their website and the bottles say it meets the MS-12633 spec. Haven't seen anything about the new spec yet but hey the engine hasn't changed in my 2021 since the old spec. I bet they'll update it on the Redline soon enough.

Did the first oil change on my truck last weekend. Figured hell with it and went with Penzoil. Decided I wasn't going to risk an argument over warranty should anything happen to my engine, and also feel that as expensive as these modern engines are to fix/replace, Ram/Fiat is not going to approve someone's oil that could potentially be detrimental to an engine while under warranty when they are footing the bill.

I used the Pennzoil PUP 0W40 for the first 20k (3 oil changes @ 5k each). At 20k I switch to Amsoil Signature 0W40. I will be doing my 25k oil change today with Amsoil again, and have enough oil on hand to do the next one as well. After that, I may switch back to the PUP for convenience. I have had no issues with either oil, and while I typically bought the Penzoil online as well as the Amsoil, it is possible to buy the Penzoil locally which is an important consideration if you ever need to add oil (I do carry a spare quart in my truck) or do an unplanned oil change. It’s also a bit cheaper per qt.

Here's the page from the 2022 2500/3500 owner's manual regarding oil/filter etc.

Just for shiz n gigs I looked up the amsoil signature 0w-40 .. is it really $14.49 per quart? I don’t see how it can be twice as good as the PUP at $7.15/qt.
