New 2027 or keep my current 2020?

It’s not my focus. Torque is my focus. I don’t know when I said otherwise.
I’m towing 19 tons and sometimes more.
I have an International dump with a 9.3L 310 HP engine, but it has 1150 torque. It’s great.
I run 4 pretty decent size farm tractors- all 6 cylinder diesels, and am well aware that torque is where the power comes from when it comes to working a truck, or tractor.
I’d rather have a 7.2L with 350/1100. The extra displacement and torque is what I prefer.
I wasn't pointing you out...I just happened to post after you is all LOL

An option I need to consider is coming up on me soon. I am leaning towards keeping the truck. It’s been pretty reliable and it is equipped the way I want it.
My warranty (7yrs 75,000 miles bumper to bumper MAX Care) is expiring soon.
I currently have 73,000 on the odometer.
There are few choices for extending the warranty on a commercial cab/chassis truck.

1. Max Care will sell me 1 more year/12K miles for ~$3,500 with a $500 deductible. That’s unreasonable, but I trust the words of warranty because I already have used my initial Max Care warranty and it’s been very good. Also noteworthy is my initial Max Care warranty has a $100 deductible. The next warranty is $500 deductible.

2. Continental will sell me a 2 year/ 24K miles for $3,300 with a $100 deductible. That is much more reasonable, but I don’t know if I trust the words of the warranty. Also, my service advisor tells me on parts used for warranty work, Continental has “price limits”. IOW, Ram must submit parts prices to Continental. According to SA, about 75% of the time, Rams parts prices are accepted. About 25% of the time, the price is too high, and Continental finds and ships the parts to dealer. This could slow down repairs in some cases.

In comparing what actually is covered, Continental actually seems to be offering more coverage in terms of what is covered.

Just from a cost perspective, the 2 year coverage for Continental is same price as 1 year Max Care AND the deductible is $100, not $500.
Also, the warranty is pro-rated. So when I sell the truck, they refund me what months/miles I don’t use. Or I can sell the truck with the remaining warranty as a selling feature, which I believe will be valuable on such an expensive to repair used truck.

Anyone know anything about “Continental”? I am tempted to just go with it, but thought I’d throw it out there

My accountant and I were discussing the need for a depreciation write off this year. I have some depreciation recapture from selling some company equipment (dump truck) in under 5 years. My current 2020 Ram 5500 is fully depreciated and paid off.

Some of the reasons to sell 2020:
1. Will need 6 new tires in next 6 months ($2,500+)
2. Fully depreciated & paid off for a year.
3. 2020 has enough power, but would enjoy the bump from 800TQ to 1075 TQ
4. Aisin 6 speed has been fine, but ZF 8 speed looks to be an improvement.
5. Warranty expires in 2,500 miles (currently have bumper to bumper 7yr/75,000mile warr). Can extend warranty for $3,500.
6. Sounds picky, but mirror don’t power fold and we have very narrow back roads. Really annoying. Could be retrofitted for ~ $1,200.
7. New truck will have 10yr/100K warranty.

Some reasons to keep the 2020:
1. No mechanical or major/minor issues
2. Looks very good for 6 years old
3. Has winch bumper & 25 K Sherpa winch that would have to be removed and installed on 2027 truck. Unknown if bumper will fit 2027.
4. Only has 73K miles on it. Still very tight & strong.
4. Has EBY Aluminum HD bed installed and it still suits my needs pretty well.

There’s probably other reasons to keep/sell I haven’t listed, but those are the first that come to thought.

If I install new tires, extend warranty and install power-folding mirrors, I’d have to spend about $7,500. That could be a partial deposit on a 2027.
New truck looks like it’ll be $95K equipped the way I want. I haven’t nailed down a potential selling price for my 2020, but $40,000-$50,000 looks to be a starting selling price range.
Hi I believe if you paid off sell it. Because 2019 after all rams have problems and a lot of problems EGR, DPF EGR COOLER, GRID HEATER all emissions systems have problems. New Ram no grid heater no more filters front left side more easy way working for maintenance truck. But you’ve to check again this is your way. Good luck

Thats not true. Not all....very few compared to the number of trucks on the road....the owners with no issues are not bragging on the internet.

I tend to agree, but I would say I’m “cautiously optimistic”.
I don’t like the problems I read about, but you are right, owners of problem free trucks don’t generally post “my truck has no problems” on the internet.

Am I missing something? my understanding is that the 7.2 is only for Medium-Duty commercial vehicles like busses, vocational trucks and not for the consumer pick-ups.

That was my understanding, too.
Also, my local Ram dealer salesman says 2027 will continue with the 6.7

If your truck is paid off, I would keep it and save the money you would have spent on a warranty. Drive the truck and maintain as normal. You will still be money ahead vs a trade or purchasing an extended 1:year warranty.

Yes, it is paid off.
The extended warranty would cost me $140/month over 24 months. That’s pretty much chump change considering what repairs I cannot do cost.
However, the extended warranty cost fee is due up front, so all $3,400 is payable all at once. My previous warranty was paid for 30 months, interest free. That was really convenient.
Other thing to consider is that any warranty I don’t use is refunded to me, and it could give the buyer of my truck a good deal of confidence knowing he’s buying a 7 or 8 year old truck with a pretty comprehensive warranty.
It should fetch me extra money at sale.

I do hear ya on saving the money, too. It’s not an easy decision and farming profits are dwindling every year.

I would keep it and get the extended warranty. Let others be the guiene pigs and wait til the new engine has been around 3 years or more before jumping in.

I’m not talking about %100 but %80 Rams have emissions problem. I’m a long trip driver annd diesel mechanic driving 120.000miles/year you can calculate a daily drive for us from Medford NY to near Dayton OH. So you can think about how and which truck better for comparing and I saw in truck stops many rams always egr dpf problems. I’m driving 2021 Ram 3500 Bighorn Dually because it better than Ford 350. Ram never says no but ford says. I’m not talking like internet talks. This is real life in trucking. Maybe you didn’t get problems but a lot of people have problems even with fords. Anyway it’s just my opinion

I'm putting my normal (paid off) truck payment into a fund for the first big repair after my extended warranty runs out or ends up being a not covered part. I might consider a new truck if they release a new cab. Should have these Atlantis gremlins worked out by then and the current 6.7 and ZF proven reliable.
