LED Cargo Bed Lights Wiring ?????

When I bought the bed light kit it was ~$175. $300 is crazy! They aren’t even that bright. I added 60” light stop from Amazon to them cause they were not bright enough.

I bought light strips to add a long time ago. I can’t find the kit for less than $275

So I finally installed the OEM LED bed light kit. Mostly installed anyways. I ran the wire to the BCM but didn't install it because I haven't been able to psych myself up for that task, as I'm 6'5" and find it somewhat difficult to work under the dash, especially in the area of the BCM. But anyways, programmed via AlfaOBD and all is good, with the exception of the switch in the bed. During the install, I also installed two 60" LED strips to the ceiling of the camper top. Rather than draw power for the LEDs from the OEM bed lights, I used a weatherproof relay. The relay is activated via the OEM lights but provides power to the LED strips from a direct line to the high amp power bar on the battery. At night when you unlock the doors, or open the tailgate, I need sunglasses cause it is so bright in the bed. Very pleased with how it all turned out and this thread was a great help. Will get a picture uploaded soon.

Could somebody layout the steps in alpha obd app on wich settings to tick for the cargo bed lights. I unsuccessfully looked for sep by sep tutorial .I have changed the tpms setting successfully and that's extent of my experience with the app. I believe to start on body computer but not sure from there? Changing computer settings make me nervous and don't want to resort to trial and error...... Thank you

When you’re connecting it to the power supply in the bed the existing plug I am assuming are we talking the fifth wheel seven pin hook up or the 115v? Also, would that activate when I turn that button on?

I seen a few videos saying they tapped into this outlet but didn’t really go into depth. I assume I still have to enable via alfa and tap into the bcm

If you purchased an OEM LED bed light kit it comes with two lights, a water proof switch and a wire loom to connect both lights to the switch and the switch to the BCM inside the truck under the dash. Once these connections are made the BCM is programmed via AlfaOBD to enable the bed lights (and switch).
Some people have connected their OEM bed lights or aftermarket LED light strips to various points to get the voltage they need to make the lights work to their satisfaction. Mostly that means the OEM switch will not function properly and some other kind of switch needs to be installed.

Yes I have the OEM bed lights however they’re not connected nor is there a button to activate them in the bed. leading me to believe they’re an incorrect p/n. There’s only two wires one I believe is brown and one is black. The black one looks like it goes to negative and the brown one I assume belongs to the bcm however it’s not connected just taped under the dash right now.

I wanted to hook them up this past weekend but in order to disconnect the C plug a zip tie needed to be cut and remove the whole pigtail which wasn’t a task I wanted to do. I’m adding a 6 gang light panel and fuse box this weekend in conjunction with some reverse lights and additional rock lights (that will be placed in the bed) would love to have the OEM lights to work regularly to keep an open button for winch/winch lights.

Would it be possible to connect the bed lights to the CHMSL cargo lights and just use the switch on the dash? Even if needed, a relay could be used and the cargo lights used for the trigger.

Five years later, I finally got this wired up and functioning. I was hesitant due to the presence of the existing wiring and general difficulty of access.

I bought a set of pin/terminal connector removal tools.
For the under-dash BCM wiring:
There is not much room to work. I disconnected a few of the large connectors down there to gain a bit of space to reach the BCM connector (blue), then swung it over towards the brake pedal to work. I removed the existing wire (like white with pink stripe?) using pin removal tool to push on pin thru window on side; and then pushed in the new green/white stripe wire in its place.

For the PDC wiring in the engine bay, the existing pin seemed larger than the new one (And I couldnt figure out how to de-pin), so I ended up just using a posi-tap connector, though I would have preferred to just repopulate the connector with the new wire. (existing wire was tan / white stripe as was the new wire)

Edit: They are even better than I expected at night. My chmsl bed lights are pretty much worthless with the topper, but these do a pretty great job illuminating the whole bed and tailgate just by themselves

Are there part numbers related to this besides the kit? Individual light part numbers? The switch? Harnesses? Jumpers?

I’m surprised that the later model trucks don’t have them, especially a Laramie.
My 2016 Bighorn came with them.
