Leaking fluid onto inside wheel

Hi everyone,

I have an appointment Wednesday to get this looked at but was curious if anyone else may have experienced this. I came out this morning to a small puddle of fluid/oil sitting on top of my inside rear passenger wheel. I looked all over but can’t seem to find where it came from. I had a little bit on the outer part of the wheel also which is what caught my eye.

Weird thing is I have not driven the truck since Saturday, and I washed it yesterday morning and I did not notice any fluid then on the outside.

From research it seems like it may be a leaking axle seal but that’s is somewhat of a guess as I see no fluid from any brake parts.

hub seal is most likely the culprit the axle seal would be just a gasket or sealant not likely to fail unless the bolts are loose the hub seal how ever is possible to be leaking, like Rockcrawlerdude posted does it have a smell?

Hows the brake pedal feel it could also be brake fluid leaking from the caliper

Thank you all for your responses. It did have a little bit of a smell. I am not super versed on various auto fluids but it reminded me of motor oil and has a slight brownish tint on my finger. I considered shock leak as well but for the life of me I could not find where it was coming from. It was just a small puddle perfectly centered on the top portion of the bottom inside wheel.

I have not driven the truck since I found it and it has not leaked any further. Hopefully it’s a minor quick fix and the dealer service center is a good one.

I’m not a mechanic (this reply will confirm that quickly…) but is it possible the leak originates elsewhere and through driving and wind got placed there? I ask because as a travel trailer owner, it seems a leak is NEVER originating from where I find it…

I have a leaking shock. (2-1/2 months wait for dealer to look at it but that is another story.) But mine is dripping on to the ground just inside the wheel, does not hit the wheel or tire. So may be something else.

When I blew my last shock it was all over the inside of wheel. I assume it would have also dripped on the ground if there had been any oil left :D

the AC drip is just behind the passenger wheel... doesn't sound like you're leak AND would require the truck be running or recently running, but in the interest of being thorough

That makes sense. Mine is just a few drips on the ground after driving. I don't know what is coming out of the shock as I drive, but there is nothing on the wheel. The only way I know it is the shock is that the tube is covered in a coat of "oil". The other 3 shocks are dry. I suppose it could be something else leaking from the engine compartment above the shock but as far as I can see that area is all clean and dry. I think the shock is leaking slowly. I suppose I could be wrong and I understand that is why the dealer wants to look at it to confirm it is the shock. But a 2-1/2 month wait just for an appt. to look at it is not reasonable at all. The issue is that the franchise our dealer is part of supposedly only allows the service department a few Ram paid appts. per week. Likely because of lower profit from those?

I am jealous of those of you, like maybe the OP, that have access to a dealer that will get you scheduled in a reasonable time.

My leaking shock does the same thing. After sitting for several hours, I notice a spot on the ground. Nothing on the wheel though. It must be dripping as I drive and then continues for a while after I park. Then it stops until the next time I drive it.
