I need new batteries. Why?

I had my truck sitting for a few days without a battery tender (I have the Deltran 5A-12V pictured above on first page) and connected my Deltran up yesterday and now have a low voltage situation and the Deltran's safety circuitry won't allow the tender to start charging. My volt meter says both batteries are down to 8V. No idea how both batteries could die on me in a matter of days. Checked to see if any lights, etc., are on in the cab but nothing. I've already replaced the driver's side battery a few years ago so it's certainly plausable the passenger battery died given it's 4 years old and the original OEM. I just don't understand how the other battery got drained so quickly.

I'm going to jump start the truck with my wife's car and try putting the tender back on it to bring it back up to full charge. I'm hoping the batteries aren't damaged and need replacement. Anyone else experience both batteries with low voltages like this?
They are finished im sure if they are at 8V, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS replace both batteries together or the old one will kill the new one early.

Looks like you might be right in that the old one killed the new one. However, I thought if lead acids didn't sit long at low voltage (literally just 2 days), they may not be damaged and can be recharged? Thx

Anything under 11V is the danger zone. You can try to charge it but don't hold your breath. If you have a desulfate mode on your charger i would use that but if it died that fast its likely a bad cell

Tagging on to this thread since it seems very relevant. I just bought a 2024 2500 (diesel) had it three days minimal driving and then left for the holidays for a month. Came back last week and had the move the truck around in the driveway to get other vehicles in and out of the garage - no problem. This afternoon after a couple of really cold days, it wouldn;t start, doesn't even click (battery driver side read 11.9 v on a multimeter). tried to jump it with NOCO (GB40) nothing, tried the wife's X1, nothing??? Can the battery be that dead in less than 6 weeks? Got it on a NOCO charger see how it is tomorrow.

We were just discussing this (jump start) in another thread...

That said, if the truck sat for a month, then started and didn't run long enough to fully charge, then sat in the cold for a few days... The battery charge should sort it out. IMHO, GB40 is WAY too small for that diesel. Also when you jump, the IBS (intelligent battery sensor) needs to know there's a good charge state so jumping on the battery terminal side blinds it and may prevent crank.

The Noco GBX155 is currently $337 on Amazon. Buy once, cry once. :-)

HUGE fan of Walmart Everstart batteries. Been buying em since I was young and broke (Im still broke, just not young anymore) and I'll be damned if any one of them has ever let me down or didn't meet expectations. Of course Walmart manufactures nothing and the batteries, for a very long time at least, were made by Johnson Controls (now Clarios). Also East Penn makes some models. I read somewhere not long ago that there are only 3 major manufacturers of batteries left in the US so regardless of which battery "brand" you buy, its likely gonna come from one of those three.

I'll also endorse NOCO products, I have a Genius 10 for the truck and RV and a Genius 2 for the motorcycle and SXS's.

Thanks, I'll check out the "jump start" thread. Understand about the GB40, all I've got at the moment and it works great with my 2020 Audi.

Yup, before I "saw the light" and jumped on the NoCo bandwagon, I had a small GooLoo that was useless for the truck, and even my ATV (hard starts) but worked great on the old 03 A6 2.7T. It doesn't have the load override and I think if you don't start inside 30-60 seconds after turning it on, it doesn't supply the boost properly.

Got a GBX45 for the wife's new Kia Sorento, and one for my son for his birthday last year.

Can update that the GB40 was able to charge, overnight, the battery such it started right up this morning. Thanks for the help. Just ordered the NOCO GBX155.

This, and I am never really more than an hour from a Walmart to get it replaced if/when needed. Often times I am not near a Costco, interstate dealer or the place is closed. You do not have the problem at Walmart.

A friend gave me his GooLoo when he sold his truck. He said he never used it or had the need, I have had it a year or so and also have not used it
and don't know if its worth a damn or not
