Grid heater failure - 2500 6.7

Yall better check yours! Anyone ever have this issue before?
Truck is around 1600 miles and grid heater burns up and alternator goes out. Truck has been at dealership for almost a week now. Very little effort it seems on the dealership side to get this fixed. It's been there for 6 days now for them to just tell me these things are bad (alternator and grid heater). As of today the grid heater hasnt even been removed to find out if the inside bolt has melted off. If so, there goes the motor! You would think Chrysler would want to know these things rather quickly. Very unimpressed with RAM / Chrysler up to this point.
 
here's the outcome.... my truck 2022 2500 laramie 6.7. Grid heater bolt broke off and went into number 6 cylinder. Mopar warranty saying there are no motors to replace it with.. sit here and wait with a $85000 piece of junk. thats the outcome nobody has accountability anymore
 
Man this is hard to believe Ram/Cummins still has not fixed this. The grid heater bolt took out my 2013 Ram. The banks intake horn and heater were on my list of parts for my 2020 when it was wrecked. This time around the horn will be going on within the first month or so of ownership.

Strangely enough has anyone heard of the bolt taking out a 3rd gen 6.7? Seems I only ever read of 4th gen +
 
Had it happen on my 2017 last summer. My truck is actually the one in the Banks videos of the new Gen 2 intake that really got the grid heater issue out there. Hopefully Ram or Cummins is paying attention and does something about it for the next drivetrain refresh in (hopefully) 2024. Cost me a fortune to put a new engine in, when my 23 finally shows up, it'll be getting the Banks intake as well.
 
I would definitely do your research on this the other risk is also this and exactly what happened to my 2022 LAramie that is still brickewd.

The lead connected to the bolt arcs out and can cut the bolt which then drops into the number 6 cylinder. This happened when I was idling down a small hill at 25 mph. Blew the engine, now they are trying to use an oil change maintenance records loophole to back out of the engines replacement (40k) and of course thiss system has nothing to do with OIL.

I have my eye on a '24 Cummins truck that was built in the spring of 2024. Would this truck still have a fear of the bolt dropping into the intake?

You can disconnect the Grid heater relay if you are worried about a grid bolt failure - free fix.
 
I just replaced mine with the banks . Why it wasn’t addressed sooner is beyond me . Then to say there are no motors is really weak . Lawyers are costly but sometimes there is no other way to get justice . Good luck to all that have had to deal with this .
 
Is the grid heater disconnect going to throw a CEL?

Not sure - doesn't seem so..never seen anyone complain about that. Dont disconect the relay seems to prevent a code or CEL.

Guys who live in cold country say there are no starting issues. Some guys just use the block heater.

Interesting that he quickly recommended disconnecting at the bolt end. I wonder why? Can't see that it would make any difference as my understanding is that the possibility of a CEL comes from the computer not sensing the current draw of the grid heater itself, not whether the relay gets energized or not. If he was really going to test his theory that it is better to disconnect at the bolt rather than at the battery, then he should have let the "wait to start" cycle complete to see if the CEL comes on right?

Just for reference, mine is disconnected at the battery and I have not had a CEL for this in a few years since I started bypassing the wait to start. Before that I let the wait to start run down a few times and did get a CEL. I have seen that if the cable is disconnected you can still get a CEL as when it is cold the grid heater can sometimes cycle even after the engine is started and when the current draw is not sensed, a CEL can be thrown. That has not happened to me so far but it may be because of our climate here. It rarely gets too cold here. If you are in a place where daytime highs are still not above freezing, maybe there is more of a chance of a CEL. In any case, back when I did get the CEL, I found that this particular CEL was easily cleared. In fact I have seen a few post that their CEL cleared on its own after a few normal starts.
 
I did do the Banks Monster Ram - not so much for the Grid heater bolt. If I had to do it it again I would have just disconnected the grid heater.
