I'm changing the fuel filter and the water separator on a 22 Ram 2500 6.7, 68RFE, first time since I bought it with 54k miles 3 1/2 months ago, 63,814 mi now, work truck miles.

Anyone have thoughts on filling the new filter with Stanadyne injector cleaner ?
I used to do stuff like that on our older '90 & 92 IDI diesels with noticeable results -
Put a concentrated dose of injector cleaner into the injectors & leave it sit overnight, etc

This of course is an entirely different machine & I sure don't want to take a chance of harming the newest truck I've ever owned.

Thanks guys

I wouldn’t do that on a HPCR. If you want to run an injector cleaner than use it in the tank at the recommended dose.

Drain the canisters, Change the filters, prime by cycleing the ign to run with your foot off the brakes 3 times ( you will hear the fuel pump run for 30sec each time you go to the run pos) then start the truck. You can put what ever cleaner you chose in the tank as per the bottles dilution requirements (not atf or oils)

Doing it any other way is asking for trouble. This is not your old IDI mechanical diesel with lower pressure injectors.

Thank you Ram bros - Good thing these things are tough, a guy working with me had already filled the rear frame filter w/ Seafoam & I ran it up the road 10 miles before I saw these posts - I would have drained it first if I'd have known.
Running fine & sounding good but do you think some lubricity additive would mean anything ?

There is no way to fill the filter with sea foam unless someone switched it to a crappy spin on filter

If you close the drain petcock can you not just put the filter in and fill it then "spin" it on? Truly unsure if this is possible.

You should throatpunch that dumba$$.

These redneck rural legend additives don't belong anywhere near a modern diesel.

No its just a cap on the bottom that comes off the canister is left in place on the truck the only way to fill that would be pull the incoming fuel line and pump the seafoam into the canister through the inlet hole.

what was said above. you cant prefill the rear filter. however the dumb dumb could have prefilled the front one.....

H3lzs already said it. cycle the system a few times and your good. if your worried about the fuel system get the archoil diesel cleaner + additive. that will do what you are looking for.

Exactly right & was I glad to learn that ! - first time replacing filters on this truck & one time I didn't go under the truck myself -
Turns out he just used Seafoam to wash the cap !
Appreciate you all taking the time to contribute on this -
Bringing maintenance up to date on a truck bought in August -

& a Different subject altogether -

Replaced the cabin air filter & didn't disassemble anymore than necessary
Concerning cleaning the Evap, does air pass thru the filter before or after the Evap ?

Thanks again
