Disable Remote Tailgate Release

You have brought up a real concern. This just recently happened to me. I normally keep the fob in my pocket with my other keys. It seems that somehow, probably when sitting, a key must have been in position that as I moved it pressed the remote release on the fob twice and the tailgate opened. Not sure if it happened while driving or when I was stopped at a traffic light. But it did happen while in transit. Fortunately all I had between the bed divider and the tailgate was my hitch head and reducer, both of which stayed in the truck. This could have been a disaster as the head unit is very heavy and if it had bounced out and hit a following vehicle could have caused an accident. I was particularly surprised to see that there is not a dash light to warn when the tailgate is open, similar to the door ajar light. I have since transferred the fob to a pocket on my coat away from everything else. This sucks as during the summer the only pockets I normally have are in my pants. So I am trying to see if there is a sleeve I can keep the fob in so as to prevent it opening the tailgate. So yes, your concern is a valid one!

You should look into this further with some testing and also check how well the tailgate is closing. I know the overhead button will not work in drive; had to shift to park to let the GF put something in the back real quick. Not sure on the keyfob though.

I do set off the panic semi-regularly if the keys (several rings on a carabiner) are in my pocket and I squat down or things like that. Normal sitting hasn't done it often.

Nothing is fool-proof to a sufficiently talented fool.
That may be true, but rather than continuing the internet bullying path the thread was heading down, I was trying to offer an alternative that may not be a true solution, but is at least a workaround.

But I digress.

Let the ridiculing resume.

I still say popping the cover and disabling the button is the most direct and foolproof way. I do like that cover though, I was looking for something to differentiate my key from my wife's and all the covers I found were girly and clearly made to stash in a large purse.

Bullying sheesh lighten up I didn’t mean to offend. It’s a thread about preventing accidentally pressing buttons. Somewhat ironic that I pressed someone’s buttons lol

Accidentally pressing buttons has been a problem for vehicles since buttons were invented. Remember those Early ‘00s chevy trucks had the front seat heater buttons right there on the arm rest

Or those 2019+ Ram HD's that put the SOS button next to the button for interior lights?

I might have to give that cover a try if I still have the problem with the new fob. I've only had this issue that I remember with my current Ram fob. None of my other trucks or any of our other vehicles have given me an issue.

I got bored today and took my fob apart to see what the board looks like and how people were disabling the buttons i dont have the tailgate or remote start buttons but it seems like all the spots are there to solder the buttons in i may desolder the panic button and try it for the tailgate release see if it works if so i will order a couple more same style buttons and enable the remote start at the same time....

Somebody needs to make a mod where the button doesn't make your horn sound off but instead opens your center console gun vault.

That's a pretty cool cabinet but I don't think I would trust Alexa with that. When the day comes that the feds come knocking for your guns and you're explaining your bad luck with canoeing accidents, she'll be ratting you out. :D

Really.hard to do since it requires two sequential hits done quickly . I would not worry about it myself .

Nick....I thought the same after reading the owners manual and seeing that opening the tailgate requires 2 taps on the fob. But, reading through this thread (and similar threads on other RAM forums) accidental release of the tailgate can and does happen. For some its no big deal, but for others it can be an expensive situation. In my case, if the tailgate released in my garage, horizontal support ribs on my garage door would sequentially hit the tailgate as the garage door opened up. Once my truck arrives, job 1 will be addressing this issue. So far I'm looking at 3 options:

1. Disable the tailgate release button on the keyfob.
2. Put some kind of padding on my garage door horizonal support ribs. I'm thinking something like the foam rubber pipe insulation tube. The slit on these tubes would allow me to easily attach them to the garage door ribs.
3. Add another set of electric eye sensors to my garage door that are at tailgate height. In my case an open tailgate would simply break the light beam and prevent the garage door from opening.

Another option that no one has looked at is popping the cover off the tail gate and disconnecting it. I'm sure it's just a solenoid that opens it so you could probably just pull the connector from that. You would lose the open button in the cab as well though (assume there is one?) May be worth a look if you want odisable the whole thing?
