Disable Remote Tailgate Release

My CC standard box 3500 is not here yet, but when it arrives it will barely fit in my garage. Having the tailgate accidentally open from the fob in my pocket would be a disaster as it would open and lean against the garage door - just waiting for someone (like me) to open the garage door. There have been some posts about this on other forums, but no definitive answer. Since it would still be nice to open the tailgate from inside the truck, the best option would appear to be 1) disable the button on the remote, or 2) disable the remote open feature via Alpha OBD. Has anyone had success disabling theirs?

On Edit: I just downloaded a copy of the owners manual and noticed that the keyfob must be pressed twice to lower the tailgate. For me this greatly reduces the risk. I'd still be interested to see if anyone has disabled theirs and how they did it.

I don't believe you can disable this function via AlfaOBD since it's just "there" needing input from the fob, and not associated with a sales code in the BCM.

The internal part of the buttons that actually make the contacts on the remote are recessed quite well for this very reason, but if it's a real concern for you you could always spring for the fob without the remote tailgate drop feature and have the dealer pair it to your truck.

Back the truck in.
Good thought...but I gotta hug that side of the garage and would be too tight to get out. My garage is just not big truck friendly. Although I loved my previous RAM 1500, one of the reasons I ordered another RAM was because RAM HD's are 13 inches shorter than comparable GM or Ford trucks.

fair enough. You’re lucky yours fits.

Even if I didn’t have other toys in the garage, the ram wouldn’t fit due to length

Other than a different FOBIK, I think it's been posted before to just take the remote apart and cover the release button(s) for the tailgate.

You have brought up a real concern. This just recently happened to me. I normally keep the fob in my pocket with my other keys. It seems that somehow, probably when sitting, a key must have been in position that as I moved it pressed the remote release on the fob twice and the tailgate opened. Not sure if it happened while driving or when I was stopped at a traffic light. But it did happen while in transit. Fortunately all I had between the bed divider and the tailgate was my hitch head and reducer, both of which stayed in the truck. This could have been a disaster as the head unit is very heavy and if it had bounced out and hit a following vehicle could have caused an accident. I was particularly surprised to see that there is not a dash light to warn when the tailgate is open, similar to the door ajar light. I have since transferred the fob to a pocket on my coat away from everything else. This sucks as during the summer the only pockets I normally have are in my pants. So I am trying to see if there is a sleeve I can keep the fob in so as to prevent it opening the tailgate. So yes, your concern is a valid one!

Ranger band around the fob? I don’t have the fancy tailgate button but I keep one around my fob just to have one handy

Thats the dumbest thing i have ever seen and if you have a tonneau cover that would not work for most styles
If you click on the link in the post above the guy said it will work with tonneau cover. BTW who come up with the name "tonneau cover" Can't even pronounce it

I’m pretty sure the Term Comes from when vehicles had open air back seats, like rumble seats, that had to be covered.

The “problems” you guys come up with amaze me.

How do y’all not set off your car alarm every time you sit down or grab your wallet? That button is on the fob, too.

It sounds stupid but it is a real problem for some people. I have a lot of keys on my fob and carry a lot of stuff in my pockets and setting off the alarm has happened quite a few times. It seems more likely to happen when it's really late or really early and the neighbors are sleeping. You realize it when the alarm goes off but I'm sure I've accidentally unlocked my truck quite a few times too. The alarm is annoying but it's the lock I worry more about. I did once accidentally remote start my truck but that was a pretty freakish event. Hopefully the new fob won't give me this problem like my old one.
