Differential Maintenance Interval?

Knocked out the rear diff service today.

The diff cover bolts had pink sealant or thread lock on them and they were a pain. The studs were the same way, tight all the way out and all the way back in like the threads were boogered up. Ended up using an impact to get them all out because I got sick of being gentle and ratcheting

Replaced the push lock clip with a lock washer and nut.

4qts filled it up to 1/4” below spilling out based on the wire dipstick method. Seems like it’s ok anywhere in that range from what I can tell so I left it there.

All cleaned up and touched up with my favorite flavor of textured black rattle can and ready to ride

Interesting. I don’t recall there being any issues when I did mine.

I’m currently at 18 months (17K miles) on my diff fluid, so I’m torn on changing it or not for warranty reasons. I do tow, but the definition of “frequent” leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Even under severe service the gear lube I run is rated for 50K miles (I’ve been running it at 100K mile normal service intervals on our 4Runner and it comes out almost like new).

I’m at 43k miles. I was going to change it at 50 but you talked me into doing it earlier.

The threads weren’t visually damaged or anything but the majority of the bolts/studs were very tight all the way out and all the way back in.

I thought it seemed thin, the color was dark caramel. There was some shimmery specks but nothing out of the ordinary for an lsd oil change especially since it’s been in there since new.

A little high for 4/5” ± 1/4”, but I’d call it good.

There is a lot of empty space in the 12” housing with the 11.5” R&P so they spec it a little lower but it’s just fine.
