Dif oil change

On a Cummins the pressure difference you are seeing is in your head, there isn't an oil pressure transducer so the truck will report the same pressure for the same conditions as long as there is at least 6 psi (pressure switch). Bottom line, ignore oil pressure as it's a completely fake pressure.
I hate to feed a derail but my curiosity is up. I just switched motor oils and my pressure reading went from consistently registering 54 psi down to reading 50 psi now. So I didn't really lose any oil pressure? It's all in my head? I am confused. Or did the previous comment not apply to me?

Mine always has and probably always will read 50-52PSI when off idle.

Cummins oil PSI is a derived value (simulated computer generated artificial value LOL) from the PCM.

It's probably just related to some other variable that's changed.

So, In theory, If the new oil runs a few degrees warmer or cooler it could show a lower or higher value in this case

This would be true if there was actually an oil temp sensor.

I saw this occur by changing oil types in my 05. Both were 15w-40’s, but one was slightly thicker. It ran more pressure and cooler.

So it has not sending unit for oil pressure?

There is no pressure or temperature transducer on the motor. There is only a 6 psi oil switch. Smoke and mirrors, and a bunch of BS. If you’re going to give me a value on the dash it should be based on a sensor.

The displayed pressure and temperature are 100% algorithm based.

Having ran a real oil psi and oil temp gauge in my ‘05 I’d say that the false temperature reading is pretty good 95% of the time, but oil pressure is probably less than 25% of the time.

One of the many things I like about the ‘22 over the ‘18 is that there are no fixed engine gauges, meaning I don’t have to see a fake oil pressure reading all the time and I’m able to select gauges that have actual readings.

Ahh, I'm up to speed now. Reminds me of my 6.0 Ford. It has a 6psi switch as well. But...the gauge is on or off. When the switch is closed, the gauge reads a bit above the halfway mark. When the switch is open, it reads at the bottom. The whole dreaming up some pressure reading to display on the gauge was a new one on me. What a Fkd up deal. How hard is it to use a pressure sending unit that gives an actual pressure reading? And you already answered my next question, the temp is calculated as well.

The old wives tales state that Dodge was tired of paying dealerships for warranty inquiries on erratic oil pressure since these motors have quite the pressure swing in very few rpms. A warm Cummins will idle at 15 and hit 60 psi by 1800 rpms, which threw drivers off and they would take their rigs into Dodge.

So they first “desensitized” the oil pressure gauge, but ended up taking the transducer out all together.

It’s the rumor, but it seems logical.

I kinda wondered if it had something to do with that. Just keep the owner in the dark and feed 'em BS, less questions that way. GM's ECT gauge is similar, when it reads straight up 210, it's actually just in the range from about 170-225-ish. Hangs on 210 all day long unless you work it hard on a hot day with the A/C on. Watch your add-on gauge (iDash, Scangage, etc.) and you see the temp bouncing up and down quite a bit on hills and such. But their oil pressure gauge was still an oil pressure gauge, last I knew. The range ran from about 25psi at warm idle to 100 cold with a little throttle.

I recall a TSB many years ago for my 2003 where Chyrsler said the gauges were set to read "customers' expectations". In other words you couldn't believe them. I doubt much has changed. Unless you install your own gauges.

I recall that too, I think was when they started ignoring the pressure transducer signal on 2nd gens and making the gauge fake. That quickly transition to a pressure switch on the assembly line.

Well, I lied. Today on cold start it read 54psi off idle.

LOL

I'd like to know what parameters go into that oil pressure calculation. Bearing wear for instance, LOL.

I just got back from a 2700 mile road trip (Montana to Rochester Mn) via South Dakotas snowmageddon and my oil pressure never varied 1 psi I think it is stuck lol. 55psi 98% of the time and a couple times dropped to 54 psi. Oil and coolant temps were pretty constant and did not have one iota effect on psi.

It's pretty traumatic to find out your truck has been lying to you!!!!!! LOL

Looks like you have a Power Wagon, so I assume 6.4. What oil are you running to get 55 PSI cruising? Mine is a 22 with 8K miles, on factory oil I would bump from 49-51 on the highway and then I changed my oil at 5K with PUP and I am in the 46-47 on the highway.

PUP 0w40 and mopar filter. I change every 5000 or so. yes 2020 6.4L. I have 30,000 miles. factory oil is supposed to be PUP 0w40.

It seems AAM sells an OEM finned diff cover for the 11.5 rear says 2003-2012 but it should fit (?)... currently dark and 'cold' so haven't gone out to double check.
Magnetic Fill/Drain Plug, but looks more like a fill vs drain being so high.. and no sight window.
