BOTH Batteries dead in two years?

But now if you have a battery leak it will damage whatever is below it.
Maybe back in the 80’s (that was a joke, stock batteries are likely flooded cells), in my case I switched to AGM as flooded cells are technologies from the bloody 1800s. AGM batteries are spill proof, the acid is held in the fiberglass mats. They wont leak even if they are broken and that is why they are safe to transport and are exempt from hazardous materials restrictions.

You pick your poison. Those batteries are clamped in on both sides very tightly. If you know anything about water, you know the force it has when it freezes.

I'm thinking you're overthinking this. In an enclosed space the water would expand when freezing and split open whatever the space is. In a tray 1/2" of water would do nothing to the battery.

It is ironic that with the massive investment in battery technology for electrification, the plain ‘ol 12v car battery is falling behind. I got 3 years to the month on my June 2020 truck batteries. Meanwhile, the battery on my 2016 tractor that is stored outside in the south Florida heat is still going strong.

I am well aware of how AGM batteries work you just made no mention in your original post about the new batteries being AGM. AGM is much better, when I finally kill off the OEM batteries in my 19 I will be going AGM deep cycle due to the use of my plow

My 2013 OEM Batteries lasted 3.5 years, Replaced DEC 2017, With Deka Batteries 9A94R (2) (East Penn MFG ) added solar chargers, still same Batteries 7 Years later. If you truck sits for More than 4+ Days, it's going to be short life Batteries in most cases. If you going to add Solar charger it must be more than 12w 2017, the one in the picture I replace with the 21w in 2021 with internal Voltage regulator. Like many have mentioned theirs the alarm system plus all the sensors that draw power even after shutting down...

Awesome idea. Does the panel just plug into the 12V outlet? (cigarette lighter socket) I wasn’t sure if these trucks had a parasitic draw detection circuit that would shut down the 12V outlets if it detected draw after truck was shutdown for xx minutes.

NO, I hard wire directly to battery, I made MY own Quick disconnection in cab. The kit does come with Alligator clips.

What I found on my 2021 3500 (after no start, completely dead - no lights) I had left the truck hooked up to my cargo trailer for several days. The trailer has a emergency braking battery that was 20 years old - the parasitic draw drained both batteries (original). Disconnected both batteries (and trailer) and charged them for several days with my noco 4 bank charger/maintainer and all was good. Couple weeks later, took a trip to Montana where the temps dropped to 15F overnight. Next day - same as most people here, there was juice but not enough for the CPU to allow a start. Jumped started and was good as long as it didn't sit for more than a day.
Got home from our trip and tested both batteries - the right passenger unit was bad, really bad, showing internal damage, the driver side checked out very good. I'm surprised the truck had enough to start with that much draw from the bad battery. Found ACDelco AGM 94R/H7 850 CCA for $169 each with free delivery!! Will keep the good FLA unit for a backup/jumper for all the other vehicles.
Glad I came across this thread - I wasn't the only one to have this issue. I wasn't looking forward in trying to track down what I thought to be a short somewhere.

Testing after 4 days on the charger

Had to jump my truck again this morning.

Previously if it sat for a couple of days or more it would need to be jumped. This time it had just been sitting overnight.

Made an appointment to drop it off at the dealer since I’m only a little over a year since purchase. Maybe this next set of batteries will go a bit longer lol.

Just replaced mine preemptively after three and a half years . Truck sits a fair amount and saw the voltage drop too fast. Didn’t want to take a chance on getting stranded. Almost 800 CDN for AGMs from Costco Canada. IMHO the OEM batteries are of poor quality .
I just had the same problem replace both of my batteries upgraded to H8 in my 2023 ram 3500 Cummins the bigger batteries are about an inch bigger or longer I should say had to chisel a little bit out of the battery tray on both sides to make them fit And a little bit on the batteries as well.

I believe the batteries are 12month warranty, if I am correct I would make sure to NOT let the dealer change them on your dime so you can take this opportunity to get better batteries.

I was just stranded in a parking lot due to no start. Lights worked and would just get a loud thunk when starting. Pulled the batteries the next day and one had failed and took out the other.

I purchased this truck in October 2022. Is this normal?
ccmartin2,

My 22 6.7 was tiwed to the dealer three times for battery issues. First both batteries dead; failed to start. Both were replaced under warranty. Second time no dash, interior, or anything lights, completely dead. The dealer charged them said they found no issues with the batteries or a drain anywhere. Reinstalled the batteries, three weeks later failed to start. Towed in, one battery tested bad, the other took 24 hours to charge. They put that one back in the truck and gave me a new to replace the one that tested bad. Cant wait to see what happens with the batteries next.

Be safe
Randy

I dropped my truck off last Friday, Saturday morning they called and let me know it was ready for pick up.

Sounds like the passenger battery had a bad cell and was dragging the other one down, particularly when the grid heater ran.

They replaced the passenger battery under warranty.

Normally I’d agree and just get a better pair of batteries, but man, I don’t think I’ve ever had a battery fail that new. Figured they could eat that one on principle alone lol.

Hey 'fish', that is very interesting as it was the passenger battery that was bad on my rig. I guess it's a 50/50 chance, but thought it is weird that you had the same one go bad!?

My 2005 Nissan Titan took the cake. At just over a year, I came out of a concert at 2:00Am, just wanting to get to the motel. Not only had the battery failed, but it dissolved a very complex terminal connection block clean off. Honestly my Ram battery did the best so far. But I lack confidence in most batteries today. I went to Vato Zone with my truck last year and the battery was gone at just under 3 years, with 10 days left on the warranty. Talk about timing. :D

Hey all. Since the batteries are in parallel, we can just hook up a trickle charger to the terminals of one the batteries and it will charge both??? (ex: charger hooked up to + and - of passenger side battery).

2020 still with original batteries here. Manufacture date of July 2020. Only 19,000km on the odometer tho. Never any issues with no starts.

Yes, that’s how they charge with a single alternator.

Just be sure the negative is hooked on the vehicle side of the battery sensor (on the drivers side) not the battery side of it.
