6.4L towing MPG?

For context, I have a 20x8.5’ enclosed 7’ interior height roughly 7500lb and I tow at ten over the limit same as I do unloaded. 75-80mph is really hell on mpg but I got places to be.
Good context, thanks. I pull a 35' triple slide travel trailer, and I'm coming it at around 10,000 pounds

Just curious but is everyone using tow/haul mode while getting those numbers? Just got back today from our second trip pulling our 30ft 7800# travel trailer and I got 8.9 mpg. And I have the 3.73 rear end and used tow/haul mode.

I find no noticeable difference in fuel economy with T/H on or off while towing. It does drop my mileage if I use it when not towing though, as it locks out MDS and keeps the truck in lower gears a bit longer.

Pulling a “light” 35’ 5er I see 8 on a good day. Probably sitting close to 11k fully loaded which is rare as we are weekenders.

These guys seeing 17 or 18 empty with a Hemi under the hood are nuts in my book. 16 downhill with a tailwind may happen with my truck. Still pretty unlikely. 15 is magic if I don’t have places to go like RC dude.

I use T/H to get up and going but once on the highway I turn it off and just lock out 8th, I never shift into that unless it's downhill.
If it sounds like it is hunting too much between 6/7 I'll lock out 7th as well.

I'll get 15, maybe 16 if I'm lucky unloaded...and that's doing the speed limit in Flori-duh.
Towing the rig it is closer to 7/8... though lately I've decided to slow down to about 60 (I'm really not in a hurry) so we will see how that goes.

When driving through the mountains I leave T/H on the whole time but when headed to the coast I typically turn it off and only use T/H when going through the smaller towns with traffic lights in the highway.

One long trip to Colorado and back. I used T/H whenever the trailer was hooked up. Drove the speed limit or less, depending on road conditions. I-40 in NM is not good for 65. My gross combined weight was 13k.
My sister and her husband were pulling a similar size trailer, with a Tacoma and got just slightly better mileage than me.

You say your combined weight was 13k. What’s the curb weight of your truck?have you weighed it? Can we see the slip?

Dry Gas 2500s typically range in the 6700-7500lb range from the factory so you were towing a 5500-6300lb trailer?

Toyota tacomas are not known for their mpg and you expect me to believe a Tacoma pulling a “similarly sized trailer” (5500-6300lb which would be maxed out) got 10mpg lol

I’m going to assume you dunno your weights and looked at your GVWR of, let’s say, 10k and added a little 3k trailer and called it 13k.

Maybe he meant his trailer GVWR is 13k:p

Rental Tacoma thrashed itself pulling my little maybe 4k trailer. I don’t watch milage but notice that the PW tops off with 10 gallons after pulling the same trailer 120m north.
6.2 Raptor always took 12, tricked 5.0 1990 Bronco…14

The last Tacoma I rented was so gutless I was surprised it could move itself.

Actually, I meant exactly what I typed. Do you not do this also? What would my motive be for lying about my weight.

My sister's trailer is not as heavy as mine, and we did weigh it, but I don't have their weight tickets. Their truck is obviously quite a bit lighter, and according the her husband, their EVIC said 9.8. The frontal area of the trailers is almost the same and that is a huge factor in MPG.

Thank you for that slip. That’s awesome.

Ok. now we’re getting somewhere. Without knowing the tongue weight for sure I’m estimating a 5k trailer (15% tongue)

You say your sisters trailer isn’t as heavy as yours so now we’re down to a 4K trailer? And we’re also down to less than 10mpg on the Tacoma. That’s more realistic.

I had 2022 1500 with the 6.4 hemi, towing a 6,000 lbs 27 ft TT, was getting anywhere from 12 to 9.0 mpg. Just got a 2022 2500 diesel with 6 speed transmission. unfortunately it's a 4x4 and sits tall 22 in from ground to bottom of front door seal haven't towed with it yet. I'm hoping I the mpg will be a little better plus I read somewhere not to use cruise control with a gas engine. You can use it with a diesel, We are looking to upgrade to a heavy TT our maybe a small 5th wheel. Just for me and the wife to use. We do lot of traveling and sometimes we stay in a rv park for a month or more depending if we find things that interest us in the area. Every summer we travel from San Antonio, TX to Phillipsburg New Jersey for a month or two to visit our grandkids.

Can you find where it says not to use cruise when towing gas?

With that much towing in your future, the diesel is smart for peace of mind under load.

Just click it into tow/haul and let the truck do the work.

I just got back from my first long trip with the trailer. Got around 9/10 mpg. I have a 3500 hemi. Trailer is 38' and just under 10k lbs. It's about the same mpg as my old 1500 w our 30', 7k lb camper. Funny because that truck got WAY better unloaded mpg. I was happy w the mpg and ecstatic about the truck's smooth performance w the load at highway speeds.
