Hello all, this is my very first post, newbie here. So currently I’ve got a 2018 crew cab 6.4 For the last two months, for work, I’ve been bumper towing a 9000 pound enclosed trailer. my truck handles the weight with ease, even going up grades and Mountain passes out here in Washington state. I’m averaging over 1100 miles a week, and in the market for a second truck Should I go with the Non-high output Cummins ?Or do y’all think the 6.4, with the 410s would be the sweet spot? Again the second vehicle will be putting on 1000 miles a week, 80% of that highway miles. It will be in a 2500 regular cab tradesman configuration. Thoughts? Does anybody have this similar truck and tow a lot? I would like your good and bad feedback. Not sure if the Cummins would be overkill, since I would never tow over 10,000 pounds, but again I am worried about the amoun of mileage I will be putting on my next truck. Thanks in advance!

I would get the Cummins in your case, just because you seem to tow a lot of the time and it will do it day in and day out and would likely outlast the gasser. Maybe wait until they back the Cummins with more gears if you can. You’ll like it better going over snoqualmie I bet.

Yeah man sounds like you know about the Terrain I deal with. There’s that one Amd was he grade between Ellensburg and Vantage. My truck handles both with ease, I do understand the concept of the big gasser and how she likes to scream going up steep mountains. It’s the just getting 7 to 8 MPG‘s is pretty disappointing. When I hear the Diesel engines get in the teens easily with the same weight. Have you heard rumors about extra gears coming to the Cummins?

I have heard rumors, but who knows when they will do it, just seems to be the way things are going.

The reason I went with a gasser is cause I rarely tow, and don’t get me wrong this thing tows no problem. But if I were constantly tugging 10k behind me I would get the Cummins. I think they like to be ran long and hard and that will help keep that emissions equipment burning hot. I think if I were you I wouldn’t spring for the HO and Aisin, I think that would be overkill and I notice a lot of people bitching about the Aisin.

Get the Cummins! You won’t be sorry. No need for the HO and Aisin for that kinda pullin.

my def consumption went WAY down after the emissions flash, so be sure that whatever truck you buy, that the cummins has the update.

I heard about a gallon every 1000 miles, not towing? or is it worse than that? The diesels will be all new to me other than what I've read and you fine folks on this cool forum

I was getting 750 or so miles to a gallon. after the flash it, it basically doubled. I only went through about 5 tanks of fuel after that before jenny craig got ahold of my truck lol

Is that what you have? Do you tow much? And how much DEF are you going thru?
Yes, love my Cummins. Don’t tow a lot but when I do it’s a 8x16 enclosed with my Harley Limited and my wife’s Street Glide probably #6000 with gear and all and don’t even know it’s back there. No downshifting no high revving like the gasser and I average 15-16 MPG. As far as DEF I have used about 6 gallons in 7000mi. DEF tanks holds 5gal. Noticed more DEF usage during last winter when I let it idle more than usual.

I bought the Cummins because of the power, longevity and the mpg as my wife and I are retired and drive it most of the time. I will never go back to a gasser in a truck, that’s just my preference after owning this powerhouse. As far as maintaining it, good maintenance is just that. Not gonna be cheap either way. And I’m not a fan of MDS. Good luck on your choice brother....:-)

Not bad. Do you typically tip off at stations that offer DEF or do you just keep bottles of the stuff with you?

I kept a few boxes of urea at the house, but never filled it past 1/2 tank, before I deleted. I never filled def at a fuel stop.

I chose the CTD and love it so far. Like you I'll likely never tow over 10k. Over here on the right side of Wa. there's plenty of hills to travel. I am simply amazed at how effortlessly this CTD pulls them. Like it just idles up them, even loaded. Then the exhaust brake going down makes stressful mountain towing a thing of the past. This is my first def diesel but I did half a million miles in straight trucks running mail around E. WA. plus owned a Jetta TDI. Both were a pleasure to operate for many miles! I am averaging about 1000mi/G of def. I have NOT had my system reflashed yet. To be fair I've never owned a 6.4. Test drove several and made offers on some. I'm very happy with how things turned out and have enjoyed nearly every mile this truck and I have spent together! I think in the end the cost of ownership will pencil out evenly. The CTD will cost slightly more to operate over time but that will be irrelevant since I'll actually be able to sell it!

I am currently looking at(for) the diesel right now. I guess I’ll have the best of both worlds since I’ll be keeping my Hemi. I’ve read some people go up to 15k between oil changes, seems kinda brave to me. I do understand the service is more expensive but dang. I change my gasser every 4-5.

It will all depend on how hard you use your CTD. Realistically you will go 11-12k before the light comes on to tell you to change it. They are super durable engines!!!!! No way would I go right up to 15k but that’s just me. Best of luck to you finding your truck and I wish you many happy towing miles...:-)

I think you'll be happy with an oil burner. The long OCI (oil change interval) for the late ISB Cummins is rooted in the fact that the automotive industry in North America has been artificially low balling useful oil life for decades. We've, collectively, been throwing millions of gallons of good oil away. A 15K OCI is not at all unreasonable. And at any rate, FCA wants you to dump it after a year. That's probably a stretch too and is most relevant to folks that reside where winters are winters. ;)

Sweet! I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a truck Tradesman 4x4 Diesel 2500. Has running boards, chrome package, spray in bedliner plus other goodies, and its not WHITE!!!. MSRP $52,.345, talked the dealer down to $45,715. Is that about a right deal?
