5th Wheel Towing - SRW vs. DRW

For the OP... The available payload drops pretty quickly from the payload stated on the door tag once you add your passengers and stuff. My 22 3500 LB SRW says I have 4126 lbs payload. However it weighs 9500 lbs with full fuel, full def, bed liner, bed cover, family of 4, and all our stuff. Showing my math... 12300 - 9500 = 2800 lbs available payload. If I added a 5th wheel hitch you can take off another 150 - 200 lb (depending on the exact hitch).

2800lbs is your remaining payload, not available payload.

What’s leftover if you look at axle weight ratings instead of GVWR?

The door sticker payload isn’t a legal number in most states and can be deceiving. A DRW only has a 1,700lb higher payload but has a rear axle capable of holding 2,750lbs more. Which number do you think is more important?

You are correct it does not matter what the sticker says. You need to weigh your truck and subtract it from the GVWR to determine your remaining useable payload.

GVWR is as meaningless as the payload sticker. You only need to care about your axle weight ratings.

Here's my old scale tag from my 2013 2500 mega cab srw(3 adults and full tank) and genesis 40cr( with sandrail, 160gallons of water, 60 gallons of fuel etc) yes i was over. ( rear axle weight empty was 3660, total truck weight 8540, 1 adult full tank)

I now tow it with a 2022 3500 megacab srw ho. I haven't weighed the new combo, but I'm sure it's similar depending on what my wife loads in the trailer.

Isn't the rear axle in a 2500 a 6k axle? If so your 1100 pounds over....

Nm....I saw you stated you were over....

I'll say you're definitely gutsy....27k in a 2500....

Thats not to bad if you have the proper tires… the AAM 11.5” is rated at 10,900 lbs and is the same axle rating as the 3500 AAM 12”

Didn't know until I weighed it, after I weighed it I wish I hadn't- ignorance is bliss lol.

The new truck is with the specs so‍♂️

I mostly posted it for informational purposes for the OP.

There is safety margins built in to the tire ratings at least lol

States on website anything over 13,500 pounds is considered DRW
