2022 3500 Creaking Noise In Steering Column/Wheel

Just noticed this on my 24 today at 800 miles. From messing around with my head in the floorboard and an LED shinning up, I think the noise is coming from the framing of the plastic shroud around the column. I was able to duplicate the sound a bit by pushing on the inside of it in certain areas. Couldn't for the life of me figure out how to fix it. If I held/pushed it in just the right spot, I could turn the wheel with my other hand without noise. Pushing forward and in.... up behind where the column shifter is, completely removed the noise.

I just can't think of any way to duplicate that pressure in that spot. After 45minutes of idle time turning the wheel back and fourth, I gave up. And I could be wrong but I dunno. I searched all over here and it doesn't seem like anyone got an actual fix. Sounds like a creaky leather seat. Super high humidity and fog today but otherwise weather is normal, 70F.
Yes, my 2021 2500 is the noisiest vehicle I've ever owned....

The steering column squeaks
The Sea belt squeaks
The seat squeaks
The hinges make noise

It's insane

So, had mine at the dealership for a couple issues on 1/15/24.

One issue I asked them to address was this creaking noise which I’ve had off and on for 20k miles. The couple times I’ve had this at the dealership to have this checked…”unable to duplicate” has been there diagnoses.

Now, after the 1/15/24 appointment, I started having a click in the steering. It’s in the exact same spot, all the time. Not hit or miss. Finally able to go back to the dealership yesterday and stopped in. I spoke to the service manager and showed him the problem which he could easily hear from the front passenger seat. Click is definitely right behind steering wheel. He claims to have replaced a few steering columns from around 2020-2023 trucks. He claims there is a potential recall on this coming from what he’s been told. He was going to make some calls and get back to me. I told him I didn’t want to just throw parts at it unless Ram has actually found and fixed the issue with an updated part.

So, I am at the wait stage standing by to see what the service manager finds out. I’ll keep y’all posted on what they figure out.

BTW….2021 Ram 3500 HO with about 34k on it.

Sorry… forgot to add:

Once I picked up the truck on 1/15/24, I noticed the clicking sound problem late that same day or the next day. And it’s been consistent since. So even though they claim to “unable to duplicate” they must have done something or took something apart. Also, I found evidence of some form of lube present on the plastic under the steering column that wasn’t there before. It cleaned off easily, but whatever they did now made the steering have the constant click in the steering. So at a minimum, now hopefully there will be an updated part to fix this issue. Time will tell…

I just had my '24 in for the same problem, only 450 miles on it. Didn't notice on the test drive, but noticed it almost immediately once I got it home. Dealer noticed it as soon as I brought it in. Diagnosed it down to the intermediate steering shaft bearing. They tried lubing it and couldn't get the noise to go away so they ordered the intermediate steering shaft. Replaced that 3 days later and the noise has been gone ever since. Fingers crossed that was the cure!

Nice… did it click or was it a creak? Mine clicks. From steering centered, the cross is at 3 o’clock, I turn the the right at about 4:30-5 o’clock, it clicks. If I go all the way around it clicks again and then every turn going back the opposite direction it will click in that same spot again.

Mine was definitely more of a creek/squeak like something was rubbing. If I started centered, it would happen as soon as I turned the wheel either direction. Most noticeable stopped or real slow driving.

Thanks. I’ll update when they figure mine out.

Exactly the same as my 24. Thanks for sharing the cure!

My 22 Laramie with 5500 miles just stared this noise today too. I guess it’s a thing.
I have a video of the noise as soon as I figure out how to post it.

I’m in the process of buying a 24’ 2500. I test drove two trucks so far and both had the steering noise rubbing issue. Brand new.

Dang, I may wait a bit before having the dealer replace the part then. Mine isn't bad and I'd hate to end up with one worse or another making noise.

The noise I heard wasn’t a click, but more like rubbing on leather. My truck broker said the dealership GM said all the 2024 rams are making the noise

Yeah that's the noise my 24 makes. Like I'm moving around in a leather chair. Radio or air turned up and I don't hear it thankfully.

Yeah. I don’t know how many I need to test drive to convince myself that most of these will make the same noise. I feel like any truck or SUV I test drive has some kind of noise. Whether it’s a rattle in the dash, or something else. My last Ram I owned had a buzzing hood release cord.

Talked with dealer yesterday. They have an order out for a new column for mine. I posted above about the clicking noise. Service Manager “claims” it’s a second revision column. Obviously the original and first replacement didn’t cure the problem, so now there’s another update. Once part shows, I’ll get scheduled for repair. Due to its arrival time, it’s likely gunna show while I’m on an out of town working next month. I’ll update probably when back.

True, the 2023 80k Tundra I dumped after a month for the RAM had way worse noises than my steering wheel. Center console rattled like marbles were in it, doors/windows whistled on the highway etc etc. If you love the truck otherwise, could always purchase and have them fix it later. Depending on the severity of the noise that is. I literally only hear it when turning slow or backing out of parking spots with the radio off. After about 3k miles of driving, it doesn't seem to have gotten better or worse.

At the dealer to have my new tires put on. Asked about the steering wheel noise and they want to replace the clock spring. I have a feeling it’s not the clock spring but I guess I’ll let them throw parts at it & hopefully I’m wrong. Learned a long time ago that techs don’t listen to diy forum folks.

At least the dealer is like 3 miles from my work & I can bum a ride back and fourth.

Clockspring has been a source. I had a busted clockspring in a tdi Jetta and it made a racket.

I watched some videos on bad clock spring noise and it sounded more like clicking than rubbing but I sure hope that's what it is.
