2020 Ram CP failure

2019 was the first year for the CP4 in the Ram/Cummins. Prior to that, all common rail Dodges/Rams from 2003-2018 had the super reliable CP3.

The CP4 is a POS, but those class-actions are typical lawyer speak. As far as cavitation, that is basically a Duradud thing, as Gimmick Motors was too stoopid to run a lift pump, and relied on the CP4 to pull the fuel from the tank. That is unspeakably idiotic.
That's my point, the cp4 has been on these trucks for better than 2 years if they were first put on the 19s. I would have thought I recall would have been out by now if these we're continually failing and and a fix put in for the 20s. Who knows though.

It actually started in 2011 when Ford started using those pump. So yeah, probably a very low incidence of failure. But like ANY other part, it can fail. No doubt the CP3 was better though.

I just don't buy that non-compatibility horse hockey with US diesel fuel claim.

There's an inordinate number first or near first time posters complaining about allegedly blown CP4s on every brand's forums. Now that cummins is on board, all the big three use CP4s for their HD diesels. I often wonder if those ghost posters are actually employees from the aftermarket companies that sell insanely expensive CP3 retrofit kits to replace CP4s.

Perhaps it needs an update, but if you read the class action page, it states 3.0L diesel RAM, not the 6.7L.

Are they also making a distinction between the original CP4 and the current CP4.2? I understand RAM's version of the CP4.2 is spec'd different and our trucks also use a lift pump in the tank to keep the CP4.2 supplied with enough fuel to prevent cavitation. That's not saying that water won't destroy it, but that would have to get through your pre filter/separator and the idiot WIF light being ignored.

The only one I truly trust is the one guy in this forum who had a very noisy CP4 pump. He went through a lot with his dealer, RamCare and FCA. He gave enough detail to be believable, all things considered.
But a new guy that joins and only gives cryptic information at best about a CP4 failure and no follow-ups is very suspicious.

This is the internet after all. You should expect anything.

The 17-20' Duramax L5P's actually use a Denso HP4 fuel pump.
I owned an LML with the dreaded CP4 and had 55,000 miles on the truck when I traded it in without it grenading but a friend of mine did have one let go and cost big bucks out of warranty.

The guy on the other forum just posted a photo of the truck on a rollback. I actually think the guy is being legit.

I didn't realize they'd gone to the Denso in the LP5. Right on. I had a 2016 LML and traded it with 65k miles with no pump related issues. I'm not saying issues don't happen for real, I'm saying there seems to be a lot of highly suspect posts that pile on about the issue from posters with no other history on the forums, trying to make it sound like if you don't retrofit back to a CP3 you're just crazy.

You guys forgot about my MY19 2500 that got a new 68503523AA injection pump installed in February with 2788 miles that persisted to blow the new fuel inlet line off under hard acceleration entering the freeway after 6 miles sending me back to the dealer with diesel fuel everywhere. I'm currently waiting on my attorney and Ram to repurchase this thing back under lemon law. It's been in the shop 36 days since I bought it new in mid November. Next week I have to move to Wisconsin and hope it makes it without breaking down on me again, the last time it sent me to the dealer the grill-active shutters failed and gave me a CEL and another 2 days in the shop with a new grill-active shutter 68452775AB. The engine software update quieted my engine down some but still does not sound right, when you are just barely on the throttle it has a weird metallic rattle noise that I can hear in the cab with windows up and radio on.

I believe that to be the same person, as the story and the miles are the same.

I have yet to see a repair order from a service dept for a failed CP4. it’s easy to find a stock photo of a truck on a rollback. Not saying this is what’s happening but some people may be very bored during quarantine lol.

Ever since they came out with low sulfur ( which is the lubricant in diesel ) I have used additives that add lubercocity to the fuel . The fuel companies are supposed to add it to the fuel but who knows if that does or doesn't happen . i have owned big rigs before and after low sulfur fuel also 2 rams . put additive in all and never had a pump problem .

I'm just letting people know be prepared for it mine stranded me in fargo north Dakota live in texas. dealer will have it for 2 months atleast... 2019 3500 mega cab limited.

2 months?! The high pressure fuel pump exploded in my VW Golf TDI and the service department replaced basically the entire fuel system in one day.
