In the last week or so I've noticed when I remote start the truck in the cold it has an extremely erratic idle for about 5-10 minutes then it will smooth out. And when I say cold, it's really not that cold compared to what many deal with, I'm talking mid to low 30's.

When I first noticed it last week I could hear it running funny while I was inside at work getting ready to leave but I thought it was just the sound coming through the building weird. Today when I heard it was worse and my mother and grandparents heard it and they wanted to know what was wrong with it. My grandfather said it sounded like it was missing and trying to stall. From what I heard it definitely sounded like it was running very rough with the rpms surging and stumbling.

It's like it's trying to go into high idle to warm up but it can't and stumbles for some reason. I'm going to try and get a video of it tomorrow morning before I leave for work. Usually at night I park it in the garage and don't remote start it, but I do notice when I'm backing out of the garage the truck kinda surges or bucks a little bit until it warms up.

Any thoughts? The only thing I that came to mind is maybe I gotta plug it in, but I really don't think it's cold enough for that around here.

Sounds like the grid heater cycling thats pretty normal depending on the alternator size you have it can be pretty clear i have the dual alt at 440 amp i can barely tell its doing it unlike some of my older trucks

How are the fuel filters?

Truck has 9400 miles so they're getting close to their change interval, however 90% of the time i fill up from a private vessel at work that goes through a set of Goldenrod waterblock and standard filter. So my filter should be alright for a bit longer.

I also have the dual Alternator setup.

If it is fine after it warms up im still convinced its the grid heater when you post your video it should confirm or cancel out my theory

Tried to get a video of it this morning when i left for work, but it didn't do it. A thought just popped into my head, my climate control sucks, so I may have set the temperature to LO when i left work to grab lunch yesterday since it got too hot in the truck. I may have forgotten it on LO, and maybe the AC compressor kept kicking on and off while the truck was trying to warm up? I'll try again after work today.

It would do that on high and low but is not much of a draw you dont even notice it on these trucks

Cold start rough idle seems to be the norm on these EGR trucks. Mine does it.

I complained to the dealer and the tech who I had a nice long chat with after picking up my truck said it's just the way they are.

The loping or stalling you seem to be experiencing may not be normal, but I think perhaps H3LZSN1P3R is correct in thinking it's the grid heater draw.

That said, my truck doesn't seem to have any issue going to high idle and exhaust brake engaged while it's warming up.

My truck does exactly as you describe from the egr it is going to be like that until warranty is up and gets deleted, i also have no issue with high idle i get the message for cabin heating on the evic and shortly after it jumps up

Just a little update, while my truck was in for the AC TSB, it seems they also performed another TSB. The work order didn't detail the TSB or recall, but here's what it said:

I googled the 18-19-04 number and it was mentioned in a TSB that did say something about correcting erratic idle during warm up, so maybe that was my issue. I've attached that TSB.
