I just wanted to post a quick review of some brakes I just put on my PW tonight.

A repeating post I see on this forum is complaints on the brake pedal feel. The common complaint is a mushy pedal or a lack of immediate feedback from the brake pedal resulting in the user feeling like they need more pressure to achieve sufficient braking.

I had not particularly felt this way about the stock brakes - although coming from a 98 Chevy 1500 and then an 01 Cummins I didn't have much to compare to. Nor did I change the brakes for this reason - my reason is I had a brake squeal I could not get rid of for the life of me. Always from the left front that would happen within the last 30 feet of braking after the vehicle was driven for 10 or so minutes. I tried it all. Resurfacing the brake pads, altering the pad edge angles, cutting the surface of the rotor to eliminate any glaze, proper cleaning and lubrication of the backing plates, etc etc. It was driving me nuts! What was even worse was throwing away brakes that appeared to have 70 percent of their life left at 33k.... Oh well.... What kind of price can you put on sanity? Anyway.

I decided to do all 4 corners because, why not. I used the PowerStop Z36 line of brake pads and Evolution Geomet coated blank/non slotted rotors. (I am not a believer in drilled/slotted rotors..... Thats another subject)

Let me tell you the difference I felt was immediate - which really surprised me. Normally brakes need a certain amount of time to properly bed - meaning the pads need to fully mate to the surface of the rotor. They assume each others shape. In addition to this it allows time for the brake pad to physically embed its material into the outer surface of the brake rotor further increasing its friction capability. Basically I am expecting the brakes to improve even further in the next couple hundred miles of driving. Like I said I didn't really "feel" like the OEM brakes needed much improvement but now moving to these I am very happy to say the initial "bite" of the brakes is vastly improved. Their responsiveness seems much better as well.

If anyone is wanting to improve their brakes on these trucks I really suggest Powerstops Z36 pads and blank Geomet rotors. You won't be disappointed.

Honestly though the best part of this whole thing is NO MORE EVIL/HORRIBLE/RAGE INDUCING SQUEAK!!!! 1st world problems, I know......

Good to hear. I have limited but positive experience with power stops. (Wife’s Explorer) I believe I will be getting a front pad set for my new Durango as the stock brembo apparently dust HORRIBLY the power stops are the fix according to the Durango forum I have joined.

At 40K on my PW, it's going to need front brakes before long.
I've used the power stop drilled and slotted rotors and the heavy tow pads on the wife's Chevy 1500 and my old F250. Loved them. So will be going with Power Stop once again.

Just wanted to update this thread with a bit more feedback.

I've got roughly 200 miles on the new brakes so far and got a chance to use them a bit more today. There is a place I drive to frequently that is right on a busy interstate where everyone is going 55-65MPH. Sometimes depending on traffic going down this hill to the drive I need to enter I'll need to lay on the brakes a bit harder to be able to slow down and cut off the highway to not interrupt everyone behind me and the stock brakes always felt a bit taxed doing this. I had to do this today and had forgotten about the new brakes already and was pleasantly surprised to notice the truck slowing much easier and then remembered the new brakes on it.

They really do work better. All around way better.

Drilled/slotted have their places, on a HD isn't truck isn't one of them. Unless you plan on road course or circuit racing your truck.

I have the Z36 kit front and rear on my Wrangler. It's night and day better than the stock brakes with stopping big, heavy tires and wheels.

I do find the OEM brakes on my 2500 to feel mushy, at least in comparison to my last two 1500's. At some point I'll install the Powerstop's and try to find some braided brake lines.

hilarious you think they belong on a wrangler but not on an hd truck....you actually have that backwards....on the wrangler is the wrong idea....they get filled with dirt and rocks and such....unless you dont wheel then carry on....and your last sentence contradicts your first sentence.....

I made no contradiction. Rotors on my Wrangler are solid. Z36 kit comes in solid.

Drilled/slotted belong in track / high performance cars that are going to see high heat where pads will off gas. Wonder why they came standard on my Lotus and Z06.

Well I'll be dipped in chit....I've never seen the ps kits come with solids....that being said the drilled and slotted setup is amazing on these trucks...

I just jumped on rock auto and checked them out....now I know why I haven't seen the solids....I always scroll down to the premium or extreme options....

To be fair, my brake kit was pieced together. I have the Z36 calipers, pads and hardware, with the Evolution coated solid rotors. As was mentioned drilled/slotted rotors are a no-go off road. Ordered everything from BuyBrakes. Also converted to coated braided lines from MetalCloak.

My Jeep has 37's on it. The OEM brakes were....well....crap. To stop those wheels and tires from 60+ required a good amount of distance. Emergency braking was sketchy AF. The new brakes halved the distance with a lot better brake feel. Surprising I didn't have to go to a better master cylinder and booster.

Do you have a part number on the MetalCloak lines you used front and rear? Thanks

Those are the lines. They came with the 2.5" Game Changer suspension system I installed.

Great - thank you for the quick reply!
