It does make you wonder....if they can bump up torque again and now make 1,075 lb/ft AND meet all emissions requirements...why the hell did they switch to the CP4 to begin with??

Everyone keeps saying this but aren't the list prices on the 2019-20 CP4 and 2018 CP3 basically the same?

What's the difference between this CP4 and other CP4's that are holding up alright (Ecodiesel, etc)? If the issue is actually existent.

Yeah, I really don't think they're going to be a retrofit through the dealership type deal in the event of a CP4 failure.

I feel that the internal remedy for the asymmetrical pump is going to be the symmetrical pump so I'm curious to see how those play out, I don't think I've heard of any failures on those yet. My guess is that based on lead times for design, testing, etc they would have had to start testing this new pump about a year ago. As I mentioned my contact at Ram couldn't identify the new pump and I'd put money on it that it is not exactly the same as the CP3 although it looks it externally.

I don't necessarily think this is a sky is falling scenario. Keep in mind people don't head to the internet to say how great everything is, it's usually to look for resolutions or to complain. The CP4 obviously has its issues as has been seen but I'm willing to bet based on the total amount of trucks on the road CP4 failure percentages are probably lower than people think, obviously the catastrophic failure that it can cause is concerning.

I think a lot of the controversy has come from the silence and secrecy of FCA. There is no mention of even a recognition of a problem publicly. Then, they sneak out a revised pump for just 4 short months of production before ditching it altogether without any public comment as well. Whatever their reasons for silence, it's not a good look in the enthusiast community.

Hopefully the new pump will be an oem stroker type cp3 which would be amazing, can’t wait for a reputable aftermarket shop to open one up. If anyone hears of the name Cummins calls it please let us know, also epsilon what did you mean by “hair trigger” pump above?

I have all kinds of inane references to the asymmetrical 2019 design pump. Time bomb, ride-or-die, hair trigger...etc.

Not all CP4s are identical. They are modified per application. Different PSI requirements...etc. The asymmetrical cam lobe in the original 2019 design CP4.2 is theorized to contribute to premature failure due to it's aggressive ramp rate cam lobe; kicking the lifter sideways in the bore and grinding the lifter roller on the lobe to create all the metal debris that trashes the rest of the system. The revised "dimple" CP4.2 uses a symmetrical cam lobe theorized to lessen this chance. It probably has some sort of different internal gearing to make up for the loss in lifter "lift" that would normally decrease pumping power. Think of a big cam in a pushrod muscle car. A more aggressive cam lobe forces the lifter up faster, and has it stay open longer so that the valve can draw in/out more air/fuel/exhaust.

Well I did my part.
Called the number and they said they would get back to me today on the future outlook of this.

Now take that with a grain of salt, but we will see what they say.

They won’t do anything

This is the KDP equivalent to the 19-20
You’ll see ads in the future that call out “CP3 swapped” in the description for them to sell it and for those who want to trade in on a 2021, remember they can’t actually depreciate your vehicle for a pump lol so stand you’re ground haha.

I sent an email to TFLTruck about the change to the different pump in 21, the last minute revised dimple pump, the whole saga. Hoping they report on it. Bickering on a forum/FB doesn't have the same pull as national media exposure.

I think at the very least, we would all just like a response or comment from FCA on the whole debacle.

Got a call back. And a case number.

I’ll keep ya appraised on this. They said they need more info and dealer info. Anyway let’s see where this rabbit hole leads.

The pic /attachment with FCA complaint phone number for CP4.2

Anyway to make this a sticky so more people see it?. Unless its already done some where?.

Thanks! I called also.

The rep identified 2 related pieces of information:
- TSB #18-060-20REV.A - this is a notification bulletin on how to identify which pump is installed.
- STAR Bulletin, dated 9/17/2020 - acknowledgment of fuel pump issues that could cause contamination and metal fragments in fuel system.

Hopefully the above is helpful, and thanks again to all who have shared other information on this.
Like others, I will be watching this carefully.

I’m trying to get the tsb as we speak

Just to clarify, I remember seeing the FCA TSB when it came out to identify which CP4 is in the truck by how many dots are on it.

The STAR Bulletin, however, is news to me.

TSB for anyone who hasn't seen it:
