I've have been putting this noise off to just normal noise of the new CP4 pump but has been in the back of my head as maybe it's not normal. So yesterday while I was at my local dealer ordering up some micro iso relays up for my aux switch up grade I stopped by the service center. While waiting there a brand new 2500 truck pulls in to be sold and I have them pop the hood so I could listen to the CP4 pump in it and it was quiet as a cucumber compared to mine. A few minutes later a tech named Nick shows up and we go and look and my truck and I start it up for him and he listens to it and he recommends that I bring it in and document it and maybe put in a star case and see if Ram wants to do anything about it. We go back inside and that other 2500 is still there and we fire that back up and he says yours is definitely nosier than this one. So I go over and make a appointment to bring it in Next Friday to document that it is making noise just in case down the road it blows up and I can't be blamed for bad Diesel fuel and no warranty . Sometimes when you first fire it up it rattles as well, not sure what that means and I only have 1925 miles on my 2500.

Does anyone else CP4 pump sound like this? Turn up the volume and listen and loop it.

I had a friend upload the video to YouTube for me.

That doesn't sound too good. Now I have to go listen to my 3500. Good luck with it and keep us updated.

That's what I was thinking and that's why I had a tech look at it. It runs and drives fine, accelerates with no issues and no engine lights.

Just checked my 3500. It sounds almost the same clicking noise. Gonna take it in on Monday.

So now I am curious as to what it should sound like?
I have a similar sound but quieter, drives fine and only has 1200 miles so is this really a abnormal?
Curious if somebody has an example of a good sounding pump?

I’m at 1800 miles on my 3500. I’m gonna go take my truck in Monday and ask the dealer. Maybe listen to a new truck to compare.

Checked this out earlier today after starting the truck. A little cool out (-15C) and the engine was about half warmed up (block heater) when I popped the hood. Try as I might, I couldn't hear anything resembling that which was reported by the OP. My EB whistles when it's cold out but other than that and the sound of a Cummins burning fuel, nuthin. Truck has over 13K kms.

That's interesting that your cp4 pump is quiet as the new 2500 truck at the dealership I listened to also was very quiet as well

When I took that video on my truck it was at 180° coolant temp and about 50° outside , if I let it sit for like say 5 minutes and then fire it back up with the hood open the pump will have some type of intermittent rattle sound to it like it has air in the system and after about 10 seconds goes into the rattle vibration sound in the video.

I want to know where is the guy RamCares? They are usually all over the place saying we are here to help but not a peep on this one.

I have a appointment on Friday to have mine looked at and document the noise its making.

Hi heloguy,

Were you able to work with your dealer yesterday for this concern? Any update on your dealer's findings are greatly appreciated!

Mine sounds like this

Thanks for sharing what one should sound like, It actually sounds like a diesel engine with a hint of belt noise.

Mine sounds like a bunch of valve tappets that are out of spec and has a vibration noise to it as well in person. If I did not have bad luck I would not have any luck with trucks since 2015, this will be my 6th since then with 3 lemons from various manufactures.

I was thinking this morning if this maybe is a bad batch of the new hydraulic adjustable lifter they went to on the new engine and not even the CP4 pump on my truck since it sounds like rapid tappet noise but the cp4 pump has a bucket tappet I believe. Not sure what it would take to get in there to replace them but that's the dealers problem.

Who know's but I guess I will find out at my appointment tomorrow but my engine does not even come close to sounding like the video ahhhr posted up.
