About what mpg would a new 6.4 2500 get

Let start off saying, I'm aware this is a heavy duty, I know it's not going to get prius levels of mpg. I'm not "concerned" about mpg, just curious. I'm thinking of trading my 2019 1500 for a current gen 2500 6.4 4x4 crew cab short bed. I love my 1500, it's tow rating is perfectly fine for me. But it's 1550lb payload is starting to become a worry. Once kids grow up and if my trailer is fully loaded, I'm estimating ill probably be about 500 lbs over payload or gvwr. That's why I'm thinking of trading up. Again I'm not expecting 25mpg. Just would like as much Info as possible before potentially throwing 20ish thousand to upgrade a truck over a 500lb, possible, worry. Any helpful info is appriciated

I have a 2021 with 3.73 gears and I average around 14.5 mixed driving.

I have a 6.7CTD, so can’t help on gas mileage. BUT… you’ll enjoy the 2500. Guarantee it!

my power wagon on 35's 15-17mpg under most driving conditions. Sure if I keep my foot in it leaving red lights and what not I can get 12mpg but easy to get 15mpg

Almost same boat. 2016 1500 with 3.92’s and only about 900lbs of payload. I’ve had a lot more and it did fine, but am looking forward to my new 2500 megacab 4.10’s.

I had the same problem related to payload so I purchased a 2022 2500 Limited.
I still have my 2019 5th Gen and with 35's on it, I get around 13.5 to 14 mpg. My 2022 2500 Limited also with 35's is still breaking in (2k miles) and I'm getting around 12.5-13 mpg.
I do a fair bit of idling which keeps my MPG's down, but it should give you some comparison.
My 2500 has the stock 3.73's and my 1500 has 3.92 gears.

21 power wagon with BFG 35x12.50 17s on stock rims. 4.10 gears.
10 to 12 MPG mixed driving. 14 mpg highway doing 75 plus.
Anything below 70, it will go up. But basically levels off at about 14 from 70 to the speed limiter at 95.

Also in a 2021 power wagon. I see similar numbers to crusty, on stock wheels. Almost all of my driving is either in canyons, or stop and go city **** (day care, errands, etc) though. Rarely do I cruise on flat highways.

I did do -120 miles of relatively flat highway driving last weekend and got 15.x round trip though. Cruise set right around 70.

I'm in the same boat as well. My 1500 is perfectly capable of pulling my toy hauler but I'm over on payload. I run e range tires and with 3.92s the best I can do is 17 mpg hwy, 14.5 mixed and 8-10 towing. From what I gathered, that is about what the 2500 gassers get. I'm looking forward to a more relaxed towing experience even if it cost me a few mpg.

Thanks for all the feed back. I was half expecting to see a bunch of mean, non-helpful replies. But ok those numbers don't seem to bad. I'm actually a VERY conservative driver, I almost never go above 60mph. So I'm sure ide see better than what most people are saying they would get. I dont care about mpg while towing, or city because 85% of my driving is freeway. I'm thinking I might be able to see 18ish mpg if I'm taking it easy while driving highway.

I’m also a fairly conservative driver and in the summer when my truck was brand new I was able to get 19 mpg on a trip to Denali National Park. Right now not so much…I’m lucky if I see 8.5 mpg.

Get the 2500 you’ll absolutely love it! I do.

As everyone else has said, high speeds and city driving will really hurt the mileage. I hand calculate it each time I fill up and get around 12-13 with mixed driving. One 150 mile trip on the freeway, fairly flat and going between 60-70 mph depending on the speed limit, I filled up right when I got home and it was 16.5. I have the 4.10s and only have 2k miles on it so it may even get better over time.

I'm right there with @dm6 .

2022 Mega Hemi w/ 4.10s on stock rollers
80mi round trip daily driver...unloaded...1100miles on the odometer
have 1 - 235mi interstate trip figured in

Averaging 14.2 per the info screen if I manage my speed to 55-60 on 2-lane blacktop. Anything above that and it's buried in the 12's. When I am bored and no time limit on my arrival, it is the game du jour of ticking up the overall average by 1 or 2 tenths.

I may have let out a <YEAH!> when I got it to 14 and held it there for a few days. MOST BORING WEEK OF DRIVING EVER!

...and then there are the trips to the pump @$3.49 for 87oct. so far in my neck of the woods.

I have a 3500 CC LB CTD so I can’t offer any information on mileage but if I could be in a 1500 I would. The 1/2 tons are just nicer to drive around. On a long trip the HD is great as a daily driver they are big and firm/stiff riding.

Check your tire pressure. If you are running empty, lower it to 45/40 and you should get a smoother ride. ;)

As far as MPG, only time I saw 16 MPG was going in slow traffic on the highway. Max speed was about 55. mostly in the 40 MPH range.

You will be getting more than just 500lbs payload increase with the 6.4. My 2022 Big Horn has a payload rating over 3000lbs. My mileage is poor, mostly city driving and I avg about 11. I got 8-9 pulling TT. My one unloaded, interstate trip I got 16 mpg.
This truck pulls my trailer with much more ease than my 1/2 did.

22 Power Wagon 37x12.5/17 w/ magnaflow dual exahust

Edit: I guess I should note; I'm running ~30psi and this is probably 60-70% <30mph around town. and the reset around 70mph highway

18? probably not a realistic expectation.

However, if you want the Hemi, get it, they're awesome trucks/engines---but don't try to "sell" yourself on the idea of 18.
