5500 Brakes on a 3500 DRW

I’m thinking of putting 19.5” rims and Higher load range tires (5500 Continentals) on the 2020 DRW. My question is, if I do, would it then give me the clearance to put the larger diameter rotors and 5500 Brakes on as well? Towing a 19k 5Th Wheel and would love to benefit from the 5500s stopping performance. The wheel conversion would primarily be for the better commercial tire and load rating I can get out of them than the 3500 Stock.

Thanks

The 5500 axles/brakes are MASSIVE compared to ours, not to mention 10 lug discs. a lot more to them then bigger wheels.

If I put a 19.5” wheel and tire (5500 similar) on the 3500DRW would it give me the clearance and diameter to put the 5500 brake rotors and equip on the 3500? I’d like to be able to benefit from the stopping capability of the 5500 on the 3500

I’m going to the 19.5 wheel and tire combo for the commercial tire and added headroom of a higher rated tire- Towing a 19.5k 5th wheel.

(also before anyone mentions it the rims are 8bolt not 10 and specialty manufactured for this conversion by American Force)

No nothing will work without a lot of custom work such as new caliper brackets and a set of custom wheel hubs

The rotors would bolt to the back of the hubs like the 06-2010 drums used to would they not?

On the front axle the the hub is usually 8 lug and then there is an adapter to make it 10 lug. So you might make it happen up front. But the rear axle on a 5500 is completely different and I don't think the brakes will work on a 3500.

Neverthmind that inner bolt pattern is also 10 lugs. Its just a lot smaller than the wheel pattern.

Thanks guys. That answers that. Any recommendations on an aftermarket upgrade then that may significantly improve performance?

I’m seriously contemplating trading the 20 3500 for a 5500CC with a CM color matched hauler bed while the getting is good for 3500 demand.

Do you run your exhaust brake with tow haul? Using the shift buttons on the steering wheel to accelerate the downshift should help a lot stopping. I don’t hear many complain about the brakes on these things.

I just had Disc brakes put on my 18k 5thwheel TH night and day difference probably less expensive option

Master cylinder likely has a larger bore as well.

Probably not worth the headache. The 3500 DRW is plenty capable as is both in the brake and load capability departments. A 20k fifth wheel is absolutely no problem.

Years back I put Rickson 19.5" rims and high load range tires on my 04 F250 because I loved how it looked. It warped the **** out of my rotors in very short order.

If the braking is a concern, upgrading to a 4500-5500 would probably be your best bet in this current light duty truck climate.

How would that warp your rotors?

Just got a quote from Performance Trailer Braking for the three axles. Probably what I’m going to do first.

Yes, the exhaust brake combined with downshift is just magic 90% of the time. Where the rubber meets the road is quick stopping and hitting that short yellow close in.

Also a downside I just learned about the 45/5500 is they derate the motor, for longevity of the power train under commercial stress, so acceleration and the power we are used to will be reduced and governed. I didn’t know this and wanted to share with the group here.

Many go with the F450 for units of this size and weight, however I won’t go to the dark side. I wish they made a 55 with a bed. The wife will NEVER go for the Hauler bed, and I probably can’t blame her.

Then again there’s a Sportchassis lol.

Thanks again for the feedback on this question. Sparked some good convo.
