Hoping someone with a 2020 2500 can confirm or deny if a noise I am hearing is normal. Have dealer appointment next week but thought I would check here. In 4wd road noise gets louder like mud tire hum. Not as loud in 2wd but still noticeable between 15-50 mph. Just sounds like faint tire hum but factory tires are not that aggressive and didn’t notice until after I used 4wd the first time. Truck is crazy quiet on inside so maybe it is just easier to hear front axel components spinning even in 2wd but something does not seem right. Saw a thread on cab lights causing this issue but checked that and no holes. Seams like bearing or something with differential. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Wow. I thought I was crazy. But I put my truck in 4 hi the other day and after I put it back in 2 WD, I could swear I could hear a whine coming from the front end. I have not really thought about it again since. It may have quite or I just do not notice the sound anymore.

Mine seems to be getting worse. I will let you know what the dealer finds Monday. Hoping just a defective bearing or CV from the factory. It sounds so much like I have mud tires and I know it was not making this sound until recently. Fingers crossed they pinpoint it. I guess this is what Warranty is for! Thanks for the response!

Only 1,000 miles. Just got the truck last month. I ran my hands around the tires to see if there was a bad tread but didn’t notice anything. Probably can’t fully rule out a bad tire but noise is consistent and the louder it gets the more I am thinking bearing, joint, or differential.

Hello @Joshcwb134 and @Lilbxl,
We certainly understand how this noise would be concerning! Please know that our team is available to you via private message for additional assistance during your dealer visit. We would be more than willing to escalate your situation to a specialist who can work alongside you and your dealer while your truck is in service.

Not sure if it's relevant but if I drive on the highway and let my foot off the pedal it sounds like there is some kind of friction in the gears and feels like I'm towing something. I won't happen all the time but like 75% off the time.

Sorry for delay in getting back. Was hoping to get my truck back and know what the problem was before responding, but to date the dealer still has my truck. Currently they have rebuilt BOTH the front and rear differentials! Carrier bearing in front diff failed and they found metal shavings in rear diff. No one has a clue how this happened and ram has sent in specialist to evaluate. Ram has been responsive and willing to help but after paying $75,000 for a truck you wouldn’t think it would need new axles after 1,200 miles. Anything short of replacing my truck or giving me a 10 year 120,000 mile warranty will result in me not being satisfied. Hope y’all don’t have the same issue but if you are hearing a howling or whirring noise in 2 or 4wd you better get your differentials checked out. Going on 15 days in the shop and still without answers. Will keep you posted on how Ram resolves and what (if anything) they identify as the problem that caused this.

Holy Smokes! That is CRAZY - 1,200 miles and both axles smoked! I've put my 2019 in 4WD a few times but never really at any speed. I guess I had better run mine in 4WD a bit more and be sure it is good to go before I run the warranty out and then have the problem. Thanks for sharing and please let us know what the "specialist" says.

Same here. I never used 4WD at speed higher then 10 mph. Will test it today for sure.

Why do you think they would replace your truck or extend your warranty because you had an issue? If they’re fixing the issue under warranty, then the system is working.

On why it may have to be replaced, they have not successfully repaired it yet and they are over half way through our states lemon law time period. On the extended warranty my Ram CRT specialist stated that they would offer an extension. Beyond that I may just be hopeful that a company might go above and beyond to do the right thing. Having an issue like this so early in ownership is outside normal circumstances. I have owned nothing but Toyota’s the past 15 years and I took a chance on Ram because I needed and HD truck. Starting to regret not sticking with Tundra. Had my last one 10 years and was never in the shop for anything other than routine maintenance.

Was your noise issue ever resolved? I have a 2019 and I'm noticing a distinct gear noise at low speeds - especially while slowing down. Also since this is my first HD truck I don't know if this is normal for an HD but it seems to have a bit of a "rumble" at higher speeds? Would love to know how things worked out for the OP.

Unless you have a center differential, you should never run 4WD on the road unless it has a covering of ice or snow. What you are experience is the tires trying to slip on the road surface as you experience transmission bind between the axles.
When off-road, you normally do not travel as fast and the surfaces you travel on allow the tires to slip easily releasing the binding/loading within the axles and transmission.
